What in the name of all that is good and holy about “Flashdance” is this?
Yes! The women who embodied the then eighteen-year-old “exotic dancer” by night, heart-of-gold welder by day (whose love of ballet, her elderly mentor and of course her devoted dog Grunt, endeared her to girls of all ages in the 1983 classic) is headed back to NM. Beals has been a big hit in the long running series “The L Word” (2004 – 2009) and “Proof” (2015). She appeared in the New Mexico made movie, “The Book of Eli” with Denzel Washington, Mila Kunis and local favorite Lora Cunningham back in ’09.
Beals’ own story of landing the now iconic role in “Flashdance” is somewhat harrowing all on its own. When put off for days and days as a teen trying out for the film she ended up lodging at the Y and then a park bench while waiting to finally be seen and ultimately landing the gig. She tells the whole tale (starting at the 15:35 mark) of how her career took off in this early 2015 interview with Sam Jones:
