Malinda LaVelle’s Project Thrust will be presenting their fifth evening-length dance-theater performance, Cover Girl, at the Vortex Theater in Albuquerque on May 20 at 8 pm. Cover Girl is a one-woman show performed by local dancer and founding member of Project Thrust, Emmaly Wiederholt. Cover Girl is the brain child of Wiederholt and LaVelle, who created the show together during an artist residency at The Peñasco Theater in the spring of 2016. The show has since been performed in Santa Fe and Durango, and is set to hit San Francisco in June 2017.
The performance is comprised of four vignettes that explore declarations of fraud, dreams of gratification, and the façades people often put on for themselves and others. Each vignette begins with the simple phrase, “This is me,” leading the audience through a comedic, yet heart-wrenching, adventure of the trials a person faces while exploring their own identity. As the show progresses, the concept of identity is blurred as the protagonist’s assertions, dress and demeanor become increasingly fantastical.
Jon Caver’s recent review in THE Magazine Santa Fe describes the performance as “a coming-of-age story about every artist’s identity within a wage-slave economy.’ Carver goes on to say that “Wiederholt is a lithe and focused dancer and excellent comic actor, breathing immense life into this physically challenging piece of minimalist theater.”
Daria Kaufman, of The San Francisco Examiner calls Cover Girl “simultaneously hilarious and disturbing.” Project Thrust began in Bay Area dance scene of San Francisco in 2010. The company became known for its unapologetic and culturally relevant content, quickly gaining audience acclaim, as well as funder support, within the community. Project Thrust has received grants from CA$H Theater Bay Area, the Zellerbach Family Foundation, and the ODC Kenneth Rainin Scholarship Fund; and the company have been nominated for an Isadora Duncan Award.
Co-founder and artistic director, Malinda LeVelle currently resides in Durango, CO where she dances with 20 Moons Dance Company and teaches dance at Ballet Durango. LeVelle is an ongoing guest faculty member, and artist-in- residence, at the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance. Her work has been shown at Teatro Paraguas, ODC Theater, Z Space, CounterPULSE, The Foundry, The San Francisco Conservatory of Dance, and in various festivals and salons.
Malinda has also been commissioned by the University of San Francisco to create new work. Emmaly Wiederholt is also a co-founder of Project Thrust, and she has performed in Santa Fe at the Railyard Performance Center, the Santa Fe Community Gallery and the Center for Contemporary Arts. Wiederholt is a native New Mexican, having returned to the Land of Enchantment in 2014 after a performance career in San Francisco. Emmaly is also a talented writer whose work has been featured in the Santa Fe Reporter and Fine Lifestyles Santa Fe, where she also serves as editor. Additionally, she is the cofounder and editor of Stance on Dance (stanceondance.com) and the author of the book “Beauty is Experience: Dancing 50 and Beyond.”
