Rebel Without A Crew On location: Robert Rodriguez, El Rey Productions Marketing VP Cecilia Conti and Alejandro Montoya Marin
Local filmmaker Alejandro Montoya Marin is among a select few chosen to compete in a challenge created by one of his personal idols, turned mentor, Robert Rodriguez. Alejandro was selected as just one of five in a nationwide search for the best independent filmmakers in the country. Each movie maker themselves was filmed, to be broadcast, as they created a feature film under the same constraints and timeline that Rodriguez himself faced 25 years ago when he burst into Hollywood with his first hit film “El Mariachi.”
As a New Mexico based director, Alejandro has worked tirelessly at his one and only lifelong dream of creating quality productions since he landed in Albuquerque fresh out of film school in 2009.
From his earliest work in the Land of Enchantment, including the web series “Film Students” (2011), and his first local short “Intrepido” (2010), Alejandro has worked non-stop. He and his impeccable team of New Mexico talent have achieved major milestones over the past several years.
His critically acclaimed short film “Princess and the Musician” (2014) is a festival and personal favorite for the director. His next short, “Low/Fi” (2015) has won awards and accolades from coast to coast including at the Napa Valley Film Festival. “Low/Fi” gained international exposure as featured at the Court Métrage at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival and at the “Sundance of the UK,” the Raindance film Festival.
The majority of Alejandro’s tight-knit team of cast and crew from “Low/Fi” garnered the 2016 Santa Fe Film Festival pilot project win with “The Jonses” (2014). The contest winner was made into a pilot last year, which is now up for major studio consideration through festival organizers.
New for 2017 Alejandro has launched his own Youtube channel with video clips highlighting his works in progress and what can only be described as his adventures, as he splits time between New Mexico, California and around the globe continuing to create his life’s passion. From commercials, music videos, and shorts Alejandro continues to chase his dream of bringing his brand of filmmaking to the next level – feature film.
Now that he has been selected to participate in the first of its kind series from the El Rey Network’s studio division, famously helmed by iconic director Robert Rodriguez, he tells OHI exclusively what it feels like to be among the five filmmakers tapped to participate in the high octane filmmaking event called “Rebel Without a Crew.”
Alejandro says, “This is a dream come true! A dream with some clear challenges, but an opportunity to show people that if you love something and you work hard for it, it can be done. This is a great way to represent my cities [that] I call home, Laredo, Merida, Monterrey and Albuquerque and to show the [naysayers] that this is only the beginning.”
In the series Rodriguez, who himself “started his career with zero advantages – just the $7,000 he earned by selling his body to science,” will task independent filmmakers with writing, directing, filming and editing their first feature length film on that storied budget of just $7K.
The just wrapped production, “Rebel Without a Crew” is a six episode series documenting the filmmaking challenge which will stream on Go90 in hour long installments early next year. The series, timed to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Rodriguez’s firs film “El Mariachi,” is designed to mentor and inspire a new wave of independent filmmakers.
New Mexico’s own Alejandro Montoya Marin is thrilled to represent the state where he’s cultivated so much of his filmmaking prowess. He tells us, “I get to scratch out my number 1 and my number 2 off my bucket list – make a feature film and premiere a movie at SXSW. I couldn’t be happier.”
