MARVELICIOUS!

Posted by on November 29, 2010 | Comments Off

UPDATE: 12/22/10 And it is so… Come April so comes CAPTAIN AMERICA: The First Avenger to Nuevo Mexico! Woot!

ABQ Biz Journals Coverage here

One or BOTH of these super-hero studs coming to a town near YOU, NM!!!

The Comic-Bible sites are a buzz-ity-buzz, BUZZ today about the fact that Marvel’s big boys are set to bring some more of their big toys to Nuevo México.

As we’ve reported here Captain America has been overseas filming in the UK and now some U.S. filming questions may be answered with a big FAT N.M.

Like Thor and light Iron Man 2 werk picked-up here before him it appears a lil’ bit O’ Captain is headed this way.

Yes, the comic rabid are batting about that very prospect. The actual chatter is stating that vague deets are spewing forth that either I-Ron Man III or The Captain is NM bound, but this blogette would not be at all surprised if we get both these
heavy hitters! Captain’s ETA is as early as January…

Joe Knows

Posted by on November 28, 2010 | 4 comments

With minimal blog speak (like none), sparse images and the light of a thousand suns, Joe Monahan writes (and writes) the Best Blog of the City, that city we all call The Q.

Just call me Kanye, because as some of you may know I openly campaigned, like Kanye for Beyonce, to be voted Numero Uno in the Q’s shiniest, glossiest mag but alas…Joe, the winner of the coveted title back in ’08, takes the top spot again!

He is now and forever my Taylor Swift. You can only imagine the sting (well, Diane Denish can more than imagine it) esp. for someone like me who took the Narcissism Test as presented by JTD and scored a whopping 35 on a scale of 1 to probably 30.

Check out Joe’s Best of the City Blogspot here, where he prolly (blog speak) won’t even make mention of his big win! Seriously, he’s like really smart and informative – It’s like the adult companion to your/my real life.

Congrats to all the winners and the runners-up (that’s us we’re #5, we’re #5 {sigh})! And now my annual tribute to this contest:

FilmNMWrapped

If you felt a great presence come and then go from the Land of Enchantment well then you are in tune with your Mighty Morphin-ness.

Only because it’s “a wrap” do I feel comfortable letting you all know that the great Amy Jo Johnson was in your midst while filming the NM movie Tiger Eyes, based on the novel by Judy Blume.

Every time I say that I feel like all the presenters of last year’s award season when they had to say, “Precious, based on the novel Push by Sapphire“. That load of required info. was even better than, “The Artist formerly known as…”

WAIT – I’m not really saying that because nothing’s better than PRINCE. Except maybe PINK which was just a typo in the last sentence that obviously should’ve stayed!

I hope Miss Johnson isn’t too annoyed with her rabid fan base of Morphins – Amy Jo, embrace it. Love is love, think of it as being comfortable in your Cherness.

I-25 Studios Gets a lil’ TNT

AlbuquerqueComing SoonFilmJobsNMProductionTV

Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip (NBC’s class of ’06-’07) makes a move, of sorts. Two of the stars of the axed show will be re-teaming for a brand spanking new TNT detective, drama series that will begin shooting in the Q next month.

The series is based on the Marshall Karp novel The Rabbit Factory. The story will follow two detectives, – “Lomax & Biggs” in their life of sleuthery, debacles and hopefully some-time debauchery, whilst navigating their way through mysteries and life as a dynamic duo.

Allan Loeb, screenwriter of the iconic, big screen sequel Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps is at the helm of the production that pairs famed Wings actor Steven Weber and member of the original Kings of Comedy actor/comedian/host D.L. Hughley as the leads.

Shooting fires-up in December at Albuquerque’s I-25 Studios, home of the AMC hit series In Plain Sight – in which Weber also appeared.

TNT, Weber, Hughley and crew (+NM job$) join current NM productions IPS and  Breaking Bad…and fill a bit of the void left by our dearly departed Scoundrels.

Welcome Gumshoes!

Industry Refresher: New Mexico is currently ranked #3 in all of N. America by Variety Magazine and #1 in the country for production by Movie Maker magazine.

New reports show that 43 states have created film tax credits and CT and Iowa to name a few have made unsuccessful runs at nabbing our coveted film & production industry. We still face stiff competition from TX and Louisiana + who are looking to bolster or add their own incentives…

Let’s make sure New Mexico continues to put the NM in entertainment, let’s keep informed, get involved and do check-our post on the dried-up Iowa Film Industry that boomed for the two years it was in effect and is now defunct…we may get us some Hawkeyes as a result which is welcome but we gotta keep vigilant on the tremendous strides NM has made in American and even Global production & entertainment.
FOR JOBS SAKE, go New Mexico!

The WORST

Posted by on November 17, 2010 | Comments Off

From the sublime in entertaiNMent to the absurd…have you ever wondered what the reigning “most annoying sound in the world” is since Jim Carrey made the concept famous in 1994′s Dumb and Dumber?

Well, you need look no further than this morning’s episode of the View (shocking, I know).  And this is supposed to be a spotlight focused on the talent of their behind the scenes staff & crew.

This stuff needs to stay behind the scenes, que no? But it may serve a purpose as one of the three components to World Peace…though you may find, like me, a much stronger hatred aversion to these women than toward any babies…

Enjoy, I mean annoy…

After The After After Party

Posted by on November 17, 2010 | 3 comments

In the paraphrased words of the late great Ed Sullivan, it was a really, really big show!

If you weren’t at the taping of NM’s Own Late Night Talk Show The After After Party with Steven Michael Quezada you missed some of the funniest, most entertaining moments of the year!

In short the audience was the MAN, the sixth man that is, but it wasn’t a tough task because from start to finish SMQ held the crowd in that endearing & engaging way he wields his HIGHlarity. The original and actual members of the Quezada family led the chain of adorable supporting the King of Hommywood in this next great, big step in his entertaiNMent career! (Mama Quezada was too presh for words)

The newest honorary Quezadas include the astounding James Douglas Show who simply brought down the house with every single beat – and I kid you not, brought the goose bumps along with the can’t-help-but-shake your booty funkification!

This production is truly a sample of New Mexico’s finest – the professional, largely volunteer crew, students, performers and guests really brought their A-game as a community, it doesn’t get more feel-good fun than that.

If you’re up for some feel-good, funky, hilarious, goodness YOU too still have a chance to catch some up-coming shows LIVE. Keep-up with all the updates & announcements right here on the show’s official Facebook page AND most definitely pick-up the James Douglas Show’s music here, here or here in the meantime.

Be a part of NM history, join the familia, and don’t miss another live show!

The premiere episode of The After After Party with Steven Michael Quezada airs Friday November 26 at 2 a.m. on the CW.

~Hot On Our Boot Heel: Hawkeye Edition

Posted by on November 15, 2010 | 3 comments

We’ve got chile, they’ve got corn & we all want movies! It’s the recession succession version of WE ALL SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM!

The hearty film industry that is New Mexico’s is so oft referenced in posts and articles where other states are clamoring for a stake, if I had a dubloom for every time – I could buy all y’all a steak!

In one of today’s heads-up blog posts, crafty Christine of Iowa paints (or needlepoints) the sad truth about films on wheels, which is the reverse of Meals on Wheels in that it is where the tax incentives lie that the film industry will follow taking their meals, their dogooding & their jobs with!

Tough lessons, easily foretold and sadly playing out for Jeff and Janelle Smith of Iowa via Omaha.com.

The Iowa Film, Television, and Video Project Promotion Program was created in 2007 – the now defunct Income Tax Credit structure saw a rapid influx of productions yielding the kind of jobs we’re all/none too familiar with here in New Mexico.

The program was suspended in 2009 after unscrupulous practices by some who “took advantage” of the incentives while the administration failed to cite and correct egregious errors in the system.

With the loss of the industry and the trickle down of revenue and collateral support systems drying-up many Iowans like the Smiths may face tough decisions about whether to weather out the tough economy or follow the industry they’ve ensconced themselves in wherever it may land.

The Smith’s made themselves assets to the industry as crew and vendor service providers, Jeff as a lighting grip and Janelle in craft service – with the programs suspended the Smith’s are out of work and are now considering a move to NM.

Like Jeff who is now unemployed, Los Angeles industry transplant Chris Bevauns, a film costume and set designer, earned $60,000.00 in 2009, working steadily on nine productions to working as a “handyman” for $20,000.00 this year.

The faithful in Iowa a.k.a. the Iowa Motion Picture Association will be championing efforts to bring the program back leading up to their state’s own legislative session.

Here‘s the full AP article.

p.s. I’m not poking fun at Christine or craftiness. AND J & J you’re always welcome in New Mexico…in fact join us at a camp out in January where we may need to set-up house in front of the Roundhouse to make sure NM stays in the game, because we ARE the game! Numero Uno Nuevo Mexico – Woot!

You tug, we’ll tug – not that way cochino, that’s the old Hollywood way…
