Sally Ride died peacefully July 23, 2012 after a courageous 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Sally lived her life to the fullest, with boundless energy, curiosity, intelligence, passion, commitment, and love. Her integrity was absolute; her spirit was immeasurable; her approach to life was fearless.
Sally was a physicist, the first American woman to fly in space, a science writer, and the President and CEO of Sally Ride Science. She had the rare ability to understand the essence of things and to inspire those around her to join her pursuits.
Sally’s historic flight into space captured the nation’s imagination and made her a household name. She became a symbol of the ability of women to break barriers and a hero to generations of adventurous young girls. In addition to Tam O’Shaughnessy, her partner of 27 years, Sally is survived by her mother, Joyce; her sister, Bear; her niece, Caitlin, and nephew, Whitney; her staff of 40 at Sally Ride Science; and many friends and colleagues around the country.

“From Zimbabwe to Santa Fe,” by local filmmaker Cristina McCandless, chronicles the lives of three Zimbabwean women who take us along for the ride when they venture forth to sell their baskets at the world’s largest folk art market…yes, Santa Fe’s folk art market.
But, the film isn’t about The Market – It’s about these uniquely appealing heroines who stretch beyond their personal and cultural boundaries as they reach for a better life. Their creativity, persistence and humor in the face of the unexpected twists and turns along the road, inspire us to rethink our own notions of sustainability, success and prosperity.
This documentary, filmed in partnership with two rural Zimbabwean villages and sanctioned by the country’s arts and culture leadership, offers us a violence-free, victim-free, feel-good immersion into every-day village life in Africa’s southern hemisphere.
“From Zimbabwe to Santa Fe” recently screened at the Riverside International Film Festival where it won the Audience Favorite and Jurors Best Documentary awards.
