State Film Office Press Release 6/27/12:

Many started to speculate about a Mad Men hiatus when Don Draper, nay that really handsome guy, Jon Hamm was spotted sporting the Grizzly Adams look.

Now we know that his Mad co-star January Jones will be at work right here in New Mexico come July.

Last week Deadline confirmed that Jones will join Ed Harris in the 1800’s Western Drama, Sweetwater.

Harris has previous experience with the film’s directors, Logan and Noah Miller with whom he starred in their original film, Touching Home. The star is also no stranger to NM, with his recent turn as John McCain in HBO’s political drama, Game Change.

Sweetwater is the story of a widow (Jones) who enlists the help of the town sheriff (Harris) to take revenge on the sheep ranchers who have murdered her husband.

Multiple sources are reporting that production is scheduled to begin in New Mexico in July.

Star Turns – Good for New Mexico

Wahlberg in Albuquerque, NM last month for Lone Survivor

Study or no study, New Mexico banks on long running series like Breaking Bad, In Plain Sight, Crash and Longmire as the life’s blood of its film production jobs and statewide peripheral spending. Mega hits like The Avengers and the hotly anticipated, Lone Ranger film spike excitement and international recognition of the state.

Repeat appearances too, of stars like Ed Harris who’s heading back for a third run in NMFilm, boost awareness of the local industry. Following his turn as John McCain in the Emmy winning HBO movie “Game Change”, and work on the recently wrapped period western “Sweetwater” with January Jones, Harris is now making news with his latest NM project, “Frontera” – costarring the lovely Eva Longoria.

Superstar Mark Wahlberg is watched the world over, and as we told you here, is now a two-term NMFilm star. At OHI we hear nothing but praise from cast & crew who have worked with the actor/producer (The Fighter, The Perfect Storm/Boardwalk Empire, Entourage) and proud family man, who is genuinely interested and concerned about those around him. The star has been quick to praise the state’s film crews and locales – he’s one of the good guys who are lending the state some positive notoriety with his return to local sets for his back-to-back turn in the NM productions, “2Guns” and “Lone Survivor”.

CORRECTION: It was previously reported in this post that actress Amy Madigan was in New Mexico to film this upcoming American Girl movie with Jane Seymour, however new details are that Madigan was in fact here at work on Frontera, starring her husband, Ed Harris and Eva Longoria.

American Girl Dolls, New Mexico USA

NOW FILMING – Twilight-shmilight, book series’ turned movies are all the rage, and New Mexico is getting a little piece of the “American Girl” franchise!

On the 2008 heels of “Kit Kittredge: An American Girl” for the big screen, another installment of the direct-to-video film series, based on the outrageously popular line of 18-inch dolls, is currently filming in New Mexico.

The dolls portray nine to eleven–year–old girls of a variety of ethnicities. The current “Girl of the Year” (GOTY) is Alberta.

A(merican) G(irl) Tube reported in September:

Upset that her New Mexico school can only afford music and art teachers in alternate years, fourth-grader Saige works with her grandmother, Mimi, to plan a fundraiser but when Mimi has an accident, Saige relies on new friend Gabi to help. (Book One- Meet Saige) Painting in her grandmother’s studio and riding her favorite horse, Georgia, helps fourth-grader Saige cope with missing Mimi and sparks an idea for funding the school art program, but more creativity will be needed to keep Georgia from being sold. (Book Two- Saige Paints The Sky). Her books are written by Jessica Haas and is illustrated by Sarah Davis (the same illustrator who drew the gorgeous illustrations in the Kanani books).

American Girl is holding auditions and is looking for: A girl with a fair complexion (the character may be named Alberta), A girl from Latin America (the character may be named Gayle), A girl of all/ any ethnicities (the character may be named Dina), and a girl with blonde hair (who may be named Tasha).

Over the summer it was announced that Jane Seymour is cast as the adult lead in the film, which has already completed principal photography in Manitoba, Canada.

American Girl: Alberta is exec. produced by Debra Martin Chase (Lemonade Mouth, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Princess Diaries), and is directed by Vince Marcello.

Duff Stuff, NM Style

Hilary Duff nut job fan sites are reporting that the actress is slated to star in the upcoming thriller,  The Gift Horse.

This nut job is reporting that the film which is also rumored to star ED HARRIS, Dan Conner John Goodman and James Russo (Beverly Hills Cop) is scheduled to shoot in Santa Fe later this year!

While WY, CO, and CA rally ’round their Film Incentives, NM continues to Poll and bat about film futures at the Roundhouse.

Alhough the recent passage of Senate Bills (SJM 15 & 16), on to SCORC furthers efforts to secure a fair shake for NM film before throwing-out our LEAD ROLE in the industry, the HollyQ of Nuevowood will be much better off when we shore-up our reign/reins TIGHT again! (NEXT UP SB44 – a long term, sustainability & accountability bill by Senator Tim Keller – All three bills in the Round this WED.)

Several projects have already steered clear of NM opting for a more stable climate in places like MI and ack, Alaska. Good to hear even if it’s just goss at this point that new films are keeping us in their eyeline.

A wretched fire tore through New Mexico’s Own Musical Theatre Southwest last month. The Theatre’s buildings and all that was housed therein have been deemed a total loss.

Among the hundreds nay thousands of people who’ve worked and/or watched works performed there whom were devastated but not destroyed by the destruction is one of New Mexico’s favorite, most talented, and successful sons.

Our beloved Neil Patrick Harris and the entire Q based Harris family are stepping-up. Before hitting it big as the cutest lil’ doc on the block as genius Doogie Howser, NPH took part in the Musical Theatre Southwest production of Peter Pan in the 1980’s.

“It played a part in his progress into the big Hollywood world, and it’s just been a great little theater company here for 50 years…We will step up and help; we want to help,” his brother Brian Harris said.

Details of the Harris family assistance coming to the Theatre to follow!
