New Mexico stands-in for WYO in this highly anticipated drama series, starring the incomparable Robert Taylor as title character/badass Western Sheriff, Walt Longmire.

The series, as we’ve long been following for you here (click & scroll) shoots in Santa Fe and surrounding areas.

Via Press Release:

A&E Network will premiere the new original scripted drama series, “Longmire” on Sunday, June 3 at 10 PM ET/PT immediately following the third season premiere of the returning hit drama “The Glades” at 9 PM ET/PT.

“Longmire,” a contemporary crime thriller set in Big Sky country, is based on the Walt Longmire Mystery novels by best-selling author Craig Johnson. The series stars Australian actor Robert Taylor (The Matrix) as Walt Longmire, the charismatic, dedicated and unflappable sheriff of Absaroka County, Wyoming, along with Katee Sackhoff (“Battlestar Galactica”), Lou Diamond Phillips (“Numb3rs”), Bailey Chase (“Damages”), Cassidy Freeman (“Smallville”) and newcomer Adam Bartley. The premiere season will feature ten one-hour episodes.

Widowed only a year, Longmire is a man in psychic repair who buries his pain behind a brave face and dry wit. Struggling since his wife’s death and at the urging of his daughter, Cady (Freeman), Longmire knows that the time has come to turn his life around. With the help of Vic (Sackhoff), a female deputy new to the department, he becomes reinvigorated about his job and committed to running for re-election. When Branch (Chase), an ambitious, young deputy decides to run against him for sheriff, Longmire feels betrayed but remains steadfast in his dedication to the community. Worn, but not worn out, Longmire often turns to close friend and confidant Henry Standing Bear (Phillips) for support as he sets out to rebuild both his personal and professional lives, one step at a time.

WYO New Mexico Style: Longmire Teaser

Posted by on March 16, 2012 | Comments Off

The long awaited New Mexico production of A&E’s original series, Longmire will premiere June 3rd, 2012.

Though casting and principal photography are just getting underway here in NM, for the first full season the griping drama series, the show’s pilot is episode is ready to go.

Back in August, 2011 the Associated Press Reported:

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — Absaroka County doesn’t exist on Wyoming maps, but it has its own county-24 license plate. Craig Johnson has a stack to prove it. One was affixed to each car in the A&E television pilot “Longmire,” and Johnson couldn’t resist taking a few home.

“If the TV show does get done, I’d really enjoy seeing characters from Wyoming who act as if they have IQs above room temperature,” Johnson recently told the Star-Tribune.

He’ll get that chance next summer.

In an email to his fans, Johnson announced Monday that A&E picked up a 10-episode season of “Longmire,” a TV series based on Johnson’s novels about Walt Longmire, sheriff of the least-populated county of the least-populated state.

The show will star Australian Robert Taylor (Agent Jones in “The Matrix”) as Walt and Portland native Katee Sackhoff (“Battlestar Galactica”) as foul-mouthed deputy Victoria Morretti. Lou Diamond Phillips and Cassidy Freeman (“Smallville”) will also star.

Johnson is the author of seven Walt Longmire mystery novels, beginning with “The Cold Dish” in 2004. Walt lives and works in the fictional Absaroka County, based on Johnson’s home territory of Ucross, population 25. Locals refer to the area as the UCLA of Wyoming — Ucross, Clearmont, Leiter and Arvada. It lies between Buffalo and Sheridan at the base of the Big Horn Mountains.

In a recent interview at his log cabin in Ucross, Johnson explained why he’s so excited about a show in which Wyoming characters are more than just plot devices. Watch one of those CSI cop dramas, and inevitably a case brings a big-city cop to some back-water Western town. One episode portrayed a Wyoming sheriff “like he was in some road show from Li’l Abner,” Johnson said.

“I mean, can you give us a little more credit than that?”

Besides the pilot, the deal calls for a full season of nine more episodes. Each will be shot in northern New Mexico, but Wyoming viewers may recognize some of the landmarks. Producers are interested in shooting some Wyoming landscapes and possibly bringing Walt’s white sheriff’s department Bronco to film driving Wyoming roads.

As a creative consultant for the pilot, Johnson spent three weeks on set in New Mexico. People ask him what it was like to walk into a world he created, to meet the people and see the places he had written about for the past eight years. He compares it to walking past a house plant every day when, one morning, the plant says, “Good morning. How are you?”

“It’s great, but weird. Odd but wonderful,” Johnson said.

“They built the entire Absaroka County Sheriff’s Department. They had four Broncos there with the emblems on them. There was Walt’s log cabin. Everything they did, they did with such a sense of detail.”

Until recently, Johnson hadn’t seen the pilot. He was on tour for his seventh Walt Longmire book and the first to make it on the New York Times Best Seller list, “Hell is Empty,” when executives asked him to fly to Warner Brothers Studios for the screening. He had three book events planned that day, so his wife, Judy, went instead.

But as a surprise for their 13th wedding anniversary, she arranged for a copy to be sent to the house — for their eyes only.

Johnson had half convinced himself that the pilot wouldn’t be picked up, that it wouldn’t be able to capture the essence of his characters.

“Not-much-to-my-surprise, it was fantastic,” he wrote in his email announcement. “Now, the wait was like agony. The performances were magnificent, the camera work inspiring, the sets and location breathtaking, the writing as sharp as a razor.

“What if A&E passed on this? It would be criminal.”

In the end, A&E didn’t pass on it. And next summer, all of Wyoming can see what a county-24 license plate looks like.

Here’s your sneak-peek:

WYO Expects Longmire Series Pick Up to Land Back in #NM to #Film

Posted by on December 6, 2011 | One comment

Longmire, the television series pilot, based on Craig Johnson’s novels about small-town sheriff Walt Longmire filmed right here in New Mexico last spring.

A&E has since picked the contemporary western crime drama for a 10 episode first-season to air on the network in 2012. The series stars Robert Taylor (The Matrix), Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica, 24), Cassidy Freeman (Smallville) and friend to NM Lou Diamond Phillips.

The Wyoming Business Report recently featured a story on the upcoming series touting that as the setting of the story, Wyoming is expected to be used for backgrounds and various footage.

HOWEVER Michell Howard, of the Wyoming Film Office, said “the series pilot was filmed in New Mexico and likely will continue there since Wyoming doesn’t have sound stages and enough established TV production crews.”

More on the series and its cast from Boom Tron:

Robert Taylor plays the man the show and novels are named after, Walt Longmire. He’s the dedicated and unwavering sheriff of Absaroka County. Recently widowed, he hides his pain behind his charisma and dry wit.

Sackhoff plays one of Walt’s deputies. Her character’s only been working with Walt for six months after working homicide in Philadelphia for five years. They two share a playful relationship, though some sexual tension may be building under the surface. Also cast in the series is Lou Diamond Phillips, Bailey Chase, and Cassidy Freeman. Chris Chulack, who is best known for his extensive work on ER, directed the pilot while Hunt Baldwin and John Coveny wrote it.

Longmire is a fantastic opportunity for Robert Taylor to break in to the mainstream. He’s an Australian actor with only a handful of film credits to his name. He most recently starred in the Australian thrillers Storm Warning and Rogue (which also starred fellow Aussie Sam Worthington) in 2007 and in 2009 he starred in Coffin Rock.
