Crazy Heart Pulls A Pretty Horses

Here’s Colin Farrell filming a scene in the Q, for the Fox Searchlight film Crazy Heart, after a Toby Keith concert back in ’08.

No word yet on when the flick will be released on the big screen. Fox ought point its search light on that info. I haven’t seen a delay in a Nuevo Mexico release date of this duration since the Spring ’99 wrap of ATPH with a Christmas 2000 release.

We hope Collin isn’t relegated to the DVD bin like the ill fated J. Lo flick where downtown doubled for Juarez. I don’t think it was the Q’s acting that did that one in….Did we ever get paid for that one???

UPDATE May 1, 2013: Bradley Cooper is out.

Some tips don’t pan out, some leads don’t come to fruition, but we’re happy to report that today’s announcement from the powers that be indicate our cross-sourced, hot topic of late has been deemed official! WOOT!

UPDATE 4/12/2013

From The New Mexico Film Office: “JANE GOT A GUN” filming in New Mexico

SANTA FE —New Mexico Film Office director Nick Maniatis announced today that the high-profile action drama JANE GOT A GUN is shooting in New Mexico starring Oscar winner Natalie Portman (Black Swan, V for Vendetta), Australian actor Joel Edgerton (Warrior, the upcoming The Great Gatsby), Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook, The Hangover), Noah Emmerich (The Truman Show, The Americans), and Brazilian actor Rodrigo Santoro (300: Rise of an Empire, Rio). Production will take place in northern New Mexico through the spring. The production will employ approximately 100 New Mexico crew members, including New Mexico resident and Unit Production Manager Alton Walpole (Crazy Heart, The Book of Eli) and over 400 New Mexico principals and background talent, including James Burnett (The Last Stand, Longmire), Sam Quinn, graduate of the Santa Fe University of Art and Design and River Shields (Beyond the Blackboard, Reunion). Gavin O’Connor, who directed Nick Nolte to an Oscar nomination in the action picture Warrior and Janet McTeer to a Golden Globe win in the drama Tumbleweeds, is directing. JANE GOT A GUN is being produced by Scott Pictures’ Scott Steindorff (The Lincoln Lawyer, The Human Stain) along with Portman, through her Handsomecharlie Films, Brillstein Entertainment partner Aleen Keshishian (Our Idiot Brother, Hesher), 1821 Pictures’ Terry Dougas (Swing Vote, The Invention of Lying), and Scott LaStaiti (Love in the Time of Cholera, Turistas). Tobey, Jakey, Jeff or Matt to re-bound New Mexico style?

New Mexico Film Summer Shoot Schedule

Rumors are swirling about who will step in to replace Jude Law in the upcoming Natalie Portman western “Jane Got a Gun”…but has anyone thought that it may be TWO of the a fore mentioned studs instead of just one????

L’est we forget that there’s more than just one vacancy left after the upheaval resulting from a certain director’s direct exit from the film…as we alluded to here, prior to that directorial mess, a genuine scheduling conflict caused a leading man void in the Portman produced pelicula.

IF anyone has ever taken a word of my advice on what a riveting film NM’s Own 2009 “Brothers” was, they’ll know that both Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal are a natural fit to work with Portman, and as for Jeff Bridges…well, CRAZY HEART!!!! Need I say more? If so, how ’bout a little film called “True Grit”, starring the naturally dreamy and perfectly aged Jeff Bridges!

Finally I’d be remiss if I didn’t disclose that Bridges’ co-star in Grit, none other than THE Matt Damon of the long ago NM Film, “All the Pretty Horses” is, as of this writing, a scheduling clear contender…

Of course it will be no surprise if none of the above make it to set, as is the world of movie making…maybe one of the locals can take a stab at one or two of the vacant roles on this pic.

Meanwhile, word on the wire is that another long lived leading man is recently signed on for a yet to be announced NM western, namely one Kurt Russell who is said to be on board with “Bone Tomahawk”, led by Timothy Olyphant (Justified) and Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter).

Keep your ears to the grindstone my friends, New Mexico’s Summer shoot schedule is set to be a bumpy ride!

Coming-Soon-New-Mexico-Films-Starring-Natalie-Portman-Maggie-Gyllenhaal

Jakey’s equally iconic and critically revered, sister/actress Maggie Gyllenhaal is too headed for a repeat visit to NM, following-up her role in New Mexico Film, Crazy Heart back in 2008, Maggie is back NOW to star in, Frank.

Jane Got a Gun will strike-up filming this spring. Downtown Albuquerque is currently bracing for Frank to start rolling this week!!!

Wonder if Natalie will be back to NM yet again to reprise her role as Queen Amidala????

New Mexico Big Screen String: Lit. Edition

Posted by on July 11, 2011 | Comments Off

ICYDK: You can’t throw a stone without hitting someone or something tied to NM Film – but don’t.

Like the intricate threads woven throughout classic literature…such as in a Cormac McCarthy novel turned film…like the Coen Bro’s Oscar® winning turn at the McCarthy best selling novel, No Country for Old Men, so is New Mexico woven into the fiber of Global Film…

Garret Dillahunt the lovably daft undersheriff to Tommy Lee Jones in No Country is named as the lead in the New Mexico production of The Boys of Abu Ghriab.

Another No Country star, Woody Harrelson is soon to be seen in the HBO original film Game Change which recently wrapped Northern N. Mex. filming…

The Coen bros put “pen to paper” for the reboot of the 1966 film Gambit, this time out starring Cameron Diaz & Colin Firth now filming in…yes, New Mexico!

The likewise best selling Dean Koontz novel turned highly anticipated NM movie, Odd Thomas is (back) at work this week.

Odd director Stephen Sommers also churned out 2009’s GI Joe which starred Sienna Miller and Channing Tatum…Sienna’s current project, Just Like a Woman is now casting and set to shoot right here in NM.

Tatum’s upcoming New Mexico movie Ten Year is expected to premiere this year…but you never can tell, another GI Joe co-star Rachel Nichols starred in the NM film Bird of the Air (formerly titled The Loop) and we’re still waiting on its release.

This isn’t the first NM term for Odd Thomas star Anton Yelchin, who is back for another run as he was for the soon to be released thriller Fright Night.

Anton’s co-star in Fright, Colin Farrell is too a repeat NM filmer as he previously starred opposite the Oscar® winning Jeff Bridges in…the wholly New Mexico film Crazy Heart.

Bridges also worked in NM…in last year’s True Grit along side Matt Damon who first worked NM waay back in ’99 in All the Pretty Horses a film based on the novel of the same name by…you guessed CORMAC MCCARTHY…

And that’s a Big Screen String…New Mexico Style!

Cyphers, NM

The New Mexico Museum of Art is co-presenting the launch of the new pilot for CYPHERS, a web series eco drama.

Friday May 27, 2011 6 p.m.
St. Francis Auditorium, in the New Mexico Museum of Art
On the Plaza, Santa Fe, NM

Enter the future of entertainment with the cast and crew of CYPHERS and be a part of this cultural shift in entertainment.

Featuring Bee Shaman McKelvey Dryden and singer songwriter Sean Healen, Panel Discussion with award-winning Director Peter Kershaw and the cast, moderated by Mary Charlotte – Radio Cafe/KSFR.

In conjunction with the New Mexico Museum of Art show Earth NOW, CYPHERS reaches across the globe from the iconic St. Francis Auditorium. Coining a new phrase in entertainment, calling itself an “eco – drama,” CYPHERS cuts an innovative path involving the audience in the exciting technology of internet entertainment. This event invites the audience to be “the first to socialize the story right from their seats in the St. Francis Auditorium and watch as CYPHERS goes live.”

CYPHERS is a web series that reveals the danger that lies just beneath the surface of an average New Mexican town, where serenity and blissful innocence mask a sinister reality. Based on true life controversial corporate stories, CYPHERS reveals a diverse group of conflicted, predominately female characters. All the characters are drawn together by a series of inexplicable phenomena, and must struggle to decipher and expose a dark corporate conspiracy that reaches far beyond their town. The one certainty is that their lives will never be the same again.

Shot as a series of short episodes and broadcast on the World Wide Web, CYPHERS weaves a mystery in the style of “Lost”, “Damages”, and “Twin Peaks” — but with an ecological twist. Each episode reveals another piece of the puzzle with the intent to engage the audience in not only solving the mystery, but to influence and change the way they interact with our food, water and environment. The action takes place in New Mexico, a land rich in mysticism and seemingly far from the clutches of corporate America.

True New Mexico

Posted by on December 21, 2010 | One comment

Like the too little known quote from Barbara Walters to her adopted daughter:

“…born in my heart. Maybe not in my uterus, but in my heart,”

So is our beloved adopted crew thar’ above. True Grit may have an eccentric birth mother in California and ruffneck pa in Texas, but for a time the Grit was all ours.

And we love ‘em and root for ‘em and take a little applause for the Coen Bros flick for ourselves as True Grit opens WIDE today.

Just look at that movie poster through the eyes of the proud care takers we were. Memmer the April snow? You memmer

Look at ‘em – the bestest lil’ actor out there, our repeat NM actor, Mr. Matt Damon, the Oscar Winner Jeff Bridges (for his turn in NM movie Crazy Heart) and that strapping, turk Josh Brolin from NM’s Academy Award winning No Country for Old men and the unsung NM film In the Valley of Elah.

So though this film has outgrown us and spends the holidays with more flashy friends and cities – make no mistake through the life’s blood of this Grit runs true New Mexico.

Don’t forget us young Hailee Steinfeld, sure as you’re to grow into your britches as well as Bridges – New Mexico is behind you and proud like the dickens that that purdy face above took such an incredible turn as the tough as nails, pan faced Mattie Ross in this NM movie.

Here’s NM’s beloved adopted son, Matt Damon flexing his ~acting chops on Letterman last week!

New Mexico Film Yesterday Today y Mañana

Yesterday – as the twang talkin’, gun slingin’ youth Jimmy Blevins, Lucas Black was but a child actor in his turn alongside former child star Henry Thomas (ET) and a fresh faced Matt Damon in NM’s Own All the Pretty Horses back in 2000.

Today – Black is a repeat offender all growed-up in the creepy NM thriller Legion. Both flicks are now available on DVD.

Mañana – Damon will be seen in the upcoming Coen Bros release of True Grit with yet another NM repeat, the one and only Jeff Bridges, who took home the best actor Oscar for his role in the NM film Crazy Heart earlier this year.

Colin Farrell (Crazy Heart, NM) appears to be headed back to the Q to star as the blood thirsty villain in the 2011 remake of the 80’s classic comedy horror Fright Night.

Tom Holland’s 1985 screenplay will be reworked by Mad Men’s Marti Noxon
maintaining its original plot that centers on teenager Anton Yelchin (Terminator Salavation, NM) and his mother Toni Collette (Little Miss Sunshine, NM) who become entangled then terrorized by Farrell’s vampire next door in this DreamWorks SKG, New Mexico production. Woot!

Wholly New Mexico Film

Posted by on May 19, 2010 | One comment

Out of what is considered a shoestring budget of just $10M comes the Universal Studios release of the SNL based MacGruber.

Like fellow low budget, wholly NM film fare turned Oscar winner Crazy Heart, Mac’s Nuevo México backdrops lend our SW charm to the overall look and feel of the flick – whether doubling for downtown Houston or a nuclear bomb test field (hey wait a minute, oh yeah).

Mac may not be headed to the Academy, it is opening to low expectations – in the face of a perceived SNL movie curse, but hopefully it can make a dent in the box office this weekend and the Wholly New Mexico film train will get another boost.

With a tag line like, “MacGruber – The Ultimate Tool” and promises of “vulgar, crude, ridiculous, silly and very, very funny” how can we help but to get our Grube on!

From SXSW Music+Film+Interactive in Austin, TX director Jorma Taccone disclosed that it is indeed Will Forte taking to the keys to tweet as MacGruber, keep up with the silly now at Grubes69.

Mac opens wide this Friday!

Yesterday Today y Mañana

Yesterday – Yet another bag of ugly, namely the terribly unsightly Chris Hemsworth is currently filming the epic Thor aqui en Nuevo México. The Thunder God was reportedly visited by the current Mr. Hannah Montana, brother Liam – The bros. and co. patroned The Broken Saddle Riding Company in Cerrillos.

Today – The Oscar and every other award winning NM movie Crazy Heart is NOW out on DVD.

Mañana – Indie, psychological thriller Inhale, starring Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend’s Wedding) and Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), is a fait accompli and awaiting distribution.

Front Seat to Oscar

Posted by on March 31, 2010 | Comments Off

Academy Award winning actor Jeff Bridges has been hard at work in New Mexico filming The Men Who Stare at Goats with George Clooney and Ewan McGregor in ’08, his Oscar winning turn in Crazy Heart in ’09, and currently starring alongside Matt Damon and Josh Brolin in the latest Coen Brothers NM film True Grit.

Bridges will perform with his band in a first ever live show at the Lensic in Santa Fe on April 18 at 3:00 p.m.

According to Santa Fe dot com: “In addition to the live performance, there will be a screening of ‘Crazy Heart’, a silent auction of movie memorabilia and a raffle. This charitable event is being staged to raise money for New Mexico Film Makers Give Back, a program of IATSE Local 480, which raised over $100,000 last year to fund local charities…

The Lensic is located at 211 West San Francisco Street. The Box office can be contacted at 505-988-1234 or www.ticketssantafe.org”

Bridges, Bingham, Bullock, Bigelow BAM!

Posted by on March 8, 2010 | Comments Off

Our locally televised post-Oscar coverage decided to tell us which 4 Oscar winners since 1902 have eventually come to live in or visit NM.

We’ll give you the scoop on present day New Mexico connections:

Right out of the gate NM’s Own NPH high-kicked-off the show. As predicted Jeff Bridges and Ryan Bingham each picked-up an Oscar for their contributions to NM film Crazy Heart.

Nominated film A Single Man has New Mexico roots behind the lens as director Tom Ford is a current resident. Precious‘ NM connection too is through it’s nominated director. Lee Daniels shot his 2008 film Tenessee in part here.

Oscar contender A Serious Man was the most recent Coen Bros release. It was just two years ago that the Bros won Best Picture with New Mexico’s No Country for Old Men. Joel and Ethan are currently at work on their adaptation of the Carles Portis Novel True Grit shooting right here with last night’s nom Matt Damon and other veteran NM actors.

The Academy’s beloved George Clooney didn’t take home a new statue and his NM film, Goats did not get any mentions nor did Crazy Heart’s Maggie Gyllenhaal’s bro. Jake & company’s Oscar worthy turn in NM’s Brothers was snubbed all together.

This year’s Best Picture winner didn’t make to New Mexico as recollected and jeered about between co-star Anthony Mackie and his interviewer here.

We’ll likely catch Bigelow and Mackie (if he’s lucky) shooting in our neck of the woods on the flip side…

p.s. KOAT did air a noteworthy look at NM’s Avatar connection though it’s ill~accessible on their website.
