It’s lights, camera, Cranston and much much more for “Better Call Saul”

Better Call Saul Billboard in Albuquerque Image via Twitter

While insiders have confirmed with OHI that Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul is on the roster to appear in the show’s upcoming prequel “Better Call Saul”, speculation abounds about which other cast and production members are or might be attached.

Saul Goodman née James McGill, beloved Mike Ehrmantraut and at least a glimpse of Jesse Pinkman are mounting reasons why Bad fans the world over are itching for the “early 2015” debut. Filming is meticulously underway in Albuquerque where the tiniest glimpses of what can be expected are coming to light. And what’s coming to light is that the BCS team is tight and right.

By his own account the bump from a November 2014 premiere into 2015 is due to Vince Gilligan’s producing and directing style being “slow as mud”, so says the Bad creator himself who continued, “I still feel I’m very slow for television”, at the recent Television Critics Association.

Slow and steady she goes, by all ground accounts here in the ABQ, Saul co-creators Gilligan and Peter Gould are hard at work carefully crafting the kind of darkly comedic drama that has the masses addicted to their work.

And what of the at first haphazard chem teacher turned drug kingpin? Like Aaron Paul, Bryan Cranston has purportedly been attached to the new show, but not only with a possible turn as either Heisenberg and/or Mr. White in the series’ flexi-time-line, but behind the camera as an episode DIRECTOR.

Cranston directed episodes of Breaking Bad (Blood Money, No Más, Seven Thirty-Seven), an episode each of The Office and Modern Family, and seven episodes of Malcolm in the Middle, with feature film direction under his belt in the 1999 film, Last Chance, which he also wrote and starred in.

Any way you look at it this series is shaping up to be another WINNER.

Watch for the television production family that spawned Saul on the 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards show, airing Monday August 25 on NBC, where Breaking Bad has been nominated one last time for a whopping 16 Emmys.

Video of the day: Cranston at bat edition

Jump to 1:20 for the flag that New Mexico state government is flying to say, “GO AWAY” to film jobs.

In a poor state whose leader endorses corporate loopholes over local business, whose political action committee is funded primarily by another state’s special interests, the vilification of one of the most hopeful, vibrant and sustainable industries ever built here, rolls on.

It’s become standard practice for this administration to spit balk in the face of local film talent and support businesses, and now the slow bloodletting has a new face and a name.

Flying in the face of the world is, in a name, “a New Mexico film study“. A better face for the promotion and growth of the state’s economy is and always has been Mr. Bryan Cranston.

The majority of the WORLD is unaware of New Mexico and those who have heard of us think we’re part of South America; except for the several MILLION who have been exposed to our previously top ranked spot in the good ol’ U.S-of-A for film production.

Talking directly to the point of what brought just one, globally acclaimed, beloved television production into our midst and our small business, tourism, talent, education and charitable organization bank accounts is the one and only Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad.

So while our government shells out some absurd amount of time and money on a tailored hex upon our film industry, productions will continue to go away and the obvious will be stated elsewhere.

UNLESS YOU SPEAK-UP and SPEAK OUT New Mexico! Cranston & Co. can’t do it all…

Breaking Bad Social Media Goodbyes

On Twitter Dean Norris is looking forward to getting off the “sh*tter”, after 11 long months of cliffhanger madness on the pot! Meanwhile on Facebook he sends out a heartfelt thanks to New Mexico’s Own Steven Michael Quezada for being the “best partner a guy could have”.

Quezada and Norris no doubt have a helluva lot of work ahead of them in the final 8 episodes of Breaking Bad, which begin airing tonight on AMC. “It’s time for the ride of your life…”, Quezada warns/promises via tweet to hungry fans of the Emmy winning show.

Sweet Jesse (Aaron Paul) and the so-far infallible Walt Jr. (R.J. Mitte) seem to be passing the historic day, before the beginning of the end tonight, with hearty meals! Mitte tweeting, “Had my croissant with extra bacon. Today is the beginning of the end… Enjoy!”. While Aaron Paul is all a twitter since noshing on “too many pancakes”, later posing the ominous question “Who will live? Who will die? #BreakingBad”.

We’re wondering the same and already Facebooked our own guess that both Walt and sadly Jess will definitely ride the big Bounder to the sky before it’s all over. Lots of fun to see some of the local cast and crew chime in with hints on what they think and may or may not know about the biggest finale since MASH! Check out what they’re saying to us here and here.

Finally, the man behind Walter White, Bryan Cranston himself tweets, “one more laugh before the tears…”

Keep up with past and present cast and all the fans going cuckoo on Twitter (BEWARE OF SPOILERS):

Breaking Bad Fan Pack Menu

So apparently I can’t give this thing away…

This morning I saw Bryan Cranston on TV signing autographs for clamoring fans at Times Square in New York City; Reddit, Tumblr and Instagram are full of popular profiles filled with shots of the uniquely Albuquerque places and experiences that played a starring role in the epic series, and national news is hot on all things Breaking Bad.

Breaking Bad House on Reddit

Here to supplement your viewing pleasure is a one of a kind prize pack which include not only a resounding “Hail yes!” from the man behind Walter White, but ensemble cast autographs, show memorabilia and Breaking Bad themed items and experiences!

But alas, I literally cannot “give this away” until the fundraising goal of at least $2,0000 is reached. With just 46 45 bids left to fulfill the minimum requirement for awarding the entire pack, these treasures remain holed up.

100% of the net proceeds donated in this bid to win it all will benefit The Barrett Foundation of Albuquerque, a transitional living facility for homeless Albuquerque women and children.

Breaking Bad: And that’s a WRAP (sort of)

Posted by on March 19, 2013 | Comments Off on Breaking Bad: And that’s a WRAP (sort of)

Above, while walking the press line at the Tribute to Breaking Bad event held Saturday night at Albuquerque Studios in New Mexico, Bryan Cranston answered a wide array of inquiries ranging from his thoughts on New Mexico in general to this juicy tidbit on how he sees the journey of Walter White saying:

“My perspective on it is that every human being is fully capable of the wide spectrum of emotions, and even the meekest person among us is a dangerous person given the right set of circumstances and what happened to Walter White was just that. Certain, specific buttons were pushed at a very delicate fragile time in his life and he made decisions that he could not take back and he was on the road, he was on a spiral to hell.”

The Albuquerque Studios, Reelz Channel, YDI Tribute to Breaking Bad culminated in this meet & greet for contest winners and event sponsors, with select media and Albuquerque civic leaders in attendance. The cast mingled with the crowed, signed autographs and posed for photos with sponsors and winners alike. With sponsorship packages and ticket sales, organizers of the fundraiser for Youth Development Incorporated, were able to raise over $28,000 in just a few weeks time to benefit the local youth organization.

After the gang buster success of this, one of the many civic outreach events the production has undertaken in their six years at work here, there was another event held at an undisclosed location.

Though OHI has confirmed that Breaking Bad cameras are still rolling her in Albuquerque, at least for a few more hours, the closed door event turned out to be the show’s wrap party, where the tears and “bittersweet” sentiments that were already beginning to swell at the fundraiser flowed at full speed, as cast, crew, production staff, friends and family shared their parting words of reflection and gratitude.

In a speech addressing the crowed Bryan Cranston thanked AMC and Sony for having the courage to pick-up the show and said, “Even though Vince Gilligan didn’t set out to make a classic that’s exactly what happened. In years to come this show will stand the test of time and scrutiny.”

Telling everyone, “All of you here tonight can say proudly that we worked on breaking bad. Now it’s time to go, it’s time to wrap it up, fold-up our tents and move away but there’s one thing that will never leave us even though we’re leaving this experience and that is from here on for the rest of our lives we will be inexorably tied to each other as a one as a family and I for one am personally am overjoyed to have this opportunity to be w this family all of you, such fine human beings number one and artisans number 2 I love you all I will miss you all, God bless you and God bless you Mr. Vince Gilligan for giving us this opportunity!”

Hometown star Steven Michael Quezada said, “I’m very proud of New Mexico, I’m a New Mexican…the crews here, you have made us proud> We’re gonna do great things moving on in the future. I’d like to thank Mr. Vince Gillagan for giving us that, we are gonna learn from that and we’re gonna go forward and we’re gonna thrive and thank you Governor Martinez. Thank you for signing a bill that will help us…this cast here has changed New Mexico let’s learn from it and let’s move on, thank you very much.”

Anna Gunn too thanked AMC and Sony “for giving our little show about meth a home.” Then addressing her co-stars calling them, “the most generous gifted hilarious group of actors I have loved playing with you every minute and I have loved watching your brilliant work.”

And in a tremendous nod of support to those who crafted the show year after year, “Most of all I really just wanna pay homage to the most amazing crew top to bottom that I have ever worked with in my career. Everyday that I came to work I didn’t feel like I was coming to work, I felt like I was coming to make art, communally with a group of people that I adored and you all are artists. You are all crafts men and woman and you gave every ounce of yourselves with such passion and dedication through sandstorms and snowstorms and scorching heat and everything in between, and I was in awe of what you did and we really became a family.”

Lastly the native New Mexican added, “I have met some of the finest human beings and artists that I have ever come across in all my years working in this business and I feel so blessed because of that and I will be forever grateful for this experience so, Que Viva New Mexico and Que Viva Breaking Bad!”

New Mexico Film Champions never say die in fight to gain more productions

Breaking Bad bill brings more television to New Mexico

In a cliff hanger that rivaled any blockbuster suspense thriller, the nail biting, sometimes gut wrenching, emotional roller coaster of our state’s film production saga came to a head this weekend.

First on Friday afternoon when the bad news spread all over the local film community and unfortunately spilled into national media that Governor Susana Martinez vetoed the increased film incentive proposal dubbed the “Breaking Bad” bill, citing lack of comprehensive tax reform as a part of her overall agenda.

Fortunately unyielding advocates for film jobs and the unsung impact of economic growth felt all across the state prevailed to see the most important adjustments to existing state film industry incentives live on.

The torch was carried on for thousands of industry workers and support service businesses in the form of pre-existing Legislative bill HB 641 – ironically titled An Act Relating to the Public Peace, Health, Safety and Welfare, which rapidly became known as the “Zombie” version of the Breaking Bad bill, largely because the amended act contained the very heart of the incentive changes required to bring more long living, qualified television productions to the state and securing unused budget dollars to roll-over into future years for more film production – all the while not impacting state spending.

Because of stalwart efforts on the floor, namely by bill sponsor, representative Antonio “Moe” Maestes, IATSE Local 480 Business Agent Jon Hendry, and driven on by a strong showing of film community support; by way of a public outcry to the Governor’s office, the “Zombie” bill lived to see another day, passing both the house and the senate, narrowly garnering a show of support from the Governor who promised to sign the bill into law as part of an omnibus tax bill which she deems acceptable and including a majority of her tax plan demands.

The cast of New Mexico’s longest running and most world famous production for whom the original film bill was named, was largely unaware of the drama at a charity event held on Saturday evening at Albuquerque Studios, where they had been filming til 4:30 a.m. Bryan Cranston, Anna Gunn, R.J. Mitte, Betsy Brandt and Bob Odenkirk, took part in the night’s Youth Development Inc. fundraiser which brought in over $28,000 to benefit children and their families right here in New Mexico, in large part to follow aspirations and become educated in film production careers, as spearheaded by Breaking Bad co-star and hometown activist Steven Michael Quezada.

Even the Mayor of Albuquerque, Richard Berry who lavished praise on the show’s substantial local economic impact and world over notoriety was learning at the same time as the cast that the heavily anticipated television production incentives were in fact one day closer to becoming a reality.

Bryan Cranston, who talked at length with reporters, YDI supporters and government officials in attendance spoke volumes about the value and immense talents of New Mexico cast and crew base, reiterating again and again that 90% of film workers on the six year production are New Mexico workers. Later in the evening at a closed door event, show creator Vince Gillagan too praised New Mexico, saying it’s a place, “which I now call my home”.

The passage of new legislation increasing incentives for long term production investment in our state finally raises the flag which New Mexico film advocates have championed for so long, sending the message to competing states and world wide productions that New Mexico Film is “open for business”.

Breaking down the vitality of the end of Breaking Bad

The bad news is that arguably one of the greatest things to ever happen to New Mexico Film Production is coming to a close.

The good news (among much good news) is, there is still time to get your very own piece of the wonderment that is Breaking Bad, before cast and crew pack-up, move out of the studio lot and select locations around the Q, and ride off into the annals of NMFilm history!

But perhaps the best news of all is that this now iconic piece of New Mexico will likely never die! Breaking Bad is and will remain one of the greatest scripted dramas the world of television (or any screen for that matter) has ever known – and Albuquerque will always have its place among the ever righteous cast and crew that has made it so!

With that, keep your eyes and ears open for the exciting things to come in the final days of filming right here in New Mexico. Bryan Cranston is making the rounds visiting local media outlets to say goodbye, promote the show and as always is working hard to help out and inspire in the community!

Here he is this morning on the air with JTD on the Peak, where among many things he shares that he WILL keep his NM home after the show wraps…additionally Bryan dishes just a bit on his feelings about the upcoming show finale.

Also this morning, Cranston and Steven Michael Quezada on the 94 Rock Morning Show >>

And finally, THIS BLOGETTE can exclusively report on some underground gossip that strongly suggests that there is more than just one ending to the epic series being filmed! IN FACT word on the wire is that there will be up to FOUR ultimate endings shot, with only the man himself, namely MR. VINCE GILLIGAN, knowing which will air on the historic night of the show’s close…

Stay tuned…

Oscars, Indies, Disney OH MY!

Posted by on March 7, 2013 | Comments Off on Oscars, Indies, Disney OH MY!

tommyleejoneslaughing

Remember Seth MacFarlane’s opening line at this year’s Academy Awards? “And the quest to make Tommy Lee Jones laugh starts now”. The funny man who the whole world was watching in that moment was of course addressing the Oscar winner’s semi-famous scowl at the infamously raucous Golden Globe Awards just weeks before.

Now guess who currently has a film in production right here in New Mexico. I’ll tell you that among the many, BOTH of the above do!

The uproarious Oscar host is hard at work on his first western comedy, A Million Ways to Die in the West right here in The Land of Enchantment, and his co-star is none other than Academy Award winner Charlize Theron, who has taken a star turn in New Mexico before in the heart achingly beautiful film, In the Valley of Elah, with then co-star Tommy Lee Jones.

Also included in the Oscar’s opening was another New Mexico filmer. Though not yet branded an Academy Award winner, Channing Tatum‘s impressive body of work swept not only Charlize Theron off her feet but the rest of the the global award show’s audience as well.

And the New Mexico hits just kept coming throughout the broadcast as nominees, presenters and attendees with New Mexico ties continued to appear.

From Lone Survivor and 2 Guns star Mark Wahlberg presenting, to his Academy Award nominated 2 Guns co-star, Denzel Washington, who many New Mexicans were able to work alongside in both 2 Guns and 2009’s The Book of Eli.

On and on and on til the grand finale of the broadcast when NM’s favorite biology teacher turned drug kingpin, Bryan Cranston joined his fellow best motion picture winners on stage for his performance in Argo.

Independent films like Tommy Lee Jones’ current New Mexico project, The Homesman are quietly at work and even more quietly housing possible co-stars who are no strangers to the most coveted award in motion pictures. It is being reported that Oscar winners Hillary Swank and the one and only Meryl Streep are set to star with Jones in the central NM film.

In southern New Mexico a little thriller called, Enemy Way is getting underway starring Oscar winner Forest Whitaker. Also down south, indie “road film” The Run Away is currently in production.

Academy Award winner Natalie Portman may have skipped the big show this year, but the Thor actress isn’t missing out on another New Mexico project (Brothers, Thor) as she is here for her next film, Jane Got a Gun.

Lastly, when Disney’s Avengers hit the stage at the Oscars this year, you were looking at a whole gaggle of New Mexico Filmers…That’s right, lest you forget the biggest picture of last year was in majority filmed right here in New Mexico!

As we’ve reported many times before, Disney is no stranger to NM, and rumor has it that the first Avenger is likely to hit a soundstage near you for at least part of the current Captain America sequel.

Though all of Oscar’s audience didn’t get to gasp in awe like the Grammy audience was able to, when Johnny Depp showed-up at that awards show, film fans all over the world are bracing for the Depp led Disney movie adaptation of The Lone Ranger.

Last year’s NM production of the major motion picture will roll-out this summer showcasing its New Mexico roots. I can also tell you now, that while the Oscar parties rolled-on last month, rumors of a lock on Depp’s next picture making its way to NM were trickling in to us!

And just today Disney has announced plans for SEVERAL stand alone movies starring Star Wars characters…New Mexico, are you into it!?!

ACTOR AND ALBQUERQUE PUBLIC SCHOOL PARENT
STEVEN MICHAEL QUEZADA TO RUN FOR SCHOOL BOARD

steven-michael-quezadaActor and Albuquerque Public School parent Steven Michael Quezada will run for Albuquerque School Board in District 5, a newly created school board district on Albuquerque’s Westside.

Long active in programs that promote youth education, involvement and development, Quezada says the most compelling reason he has for wanting to be on the Board is to impact the lives of children.

“The incredible challenges our schools face require a Board Member who is committed to change and innovation,” Quezada said. Quezada continued, “Albuquerque’s my home. I want my kids and all of our children to be able to go to any public or charter school and receive and excellent education. It’s our responsibility to make sure no child falls through the cracks.”

Quezada served from 2009-2010 as the President of the Public Academy for Performing Arts PTSO Board and later served as Vice-President/Parent on the Public Academy for Performing Arts Charter School Governing Council where three of his four children attend.

“From experience, I know young people thrive in environments where academics and artistic creativity are paired,” says Quezada.

In the 1980’s Quezada was the director for Youth Development Inc.’s gang intervention program, “Teatro Consejo”, and more recently, he has been involved with YDI’s Elev8 program for Middle School students. Quezada, with the help of three-time Emmy winning actor Bryan Cranston developed and directed YDI’s Actors Core program.

Quezada volunteers his time and energy for various charitable causes in New Mexico.

Endorsing Quezada for the board are Westside leaders, Bernalillo County Commissioners Debbie O’Malley and Art De la Cruz, State Senator Elect Jacob Candelaria and State Representative Antonio “Moe” Maestas, YDI President and CEO Chris Baca and the South West Alliance of Neighbors President Klarissa Pena. Also supporting Quezada is former State Senator and longtime friend, Eric Griego.

As a lifelong resident of Albuquerque’s Westside, Quezada attended West Mesa High School and Eastern New Mexico before becoming a comedian and actor and television star. Quezada currently stars as DEA agent Steven Gomez, the partner of main character Hank Schrader in the Emmy Award Winning AMC series Breaking Bad.

Quezada and his wife Cherise have four children.

The election will be held on Tuesday, February 5, 2013.
