First Look: Johnny Depp on the L.A. set of Transcendence

Posted by on May 1, 2013 | Comments Off on First Look: Johnny Depp on the L.A. set of Transcendence

Johnny Depp Starts Transcendence

Gone are the array of make-shift dreads, gobs of charcoal makeup, and swaths of flowing gypsy-like fabric; Also missing is the soon-to-be modernly iconic crow headdress, Native American chestplate, and all other accessories and makeup that the world has come to recognize as signature Johnny Depp. Though in a few of these pics it appears that he could be wearing a minor facial prosthetic and is perhaps sporting some applied scruff.

A slick shutterbug or two captured these images of Depp on the Los Angeles set of his next film, Transcendence – due to shoot in New Mexico within the next few weeks. This Peek at The Lone Ranger star shows dress, cut and shave more similar to some of his very early roles like Officer Tom Hansen or even doomed teen Glen Lantz!

In Trancendence Johnny Depp heads an all star cast including Morgan Freeman, Paul Bettany, Cillian Murphey, Rebecca Hall and Kate Mara. Details of the film’s intriguing plot is being held tightly under wraps, though it has been reported that it will be a psychological, science fiction thriller, which follows a scientist whose brain is the first to be downloaded onto computer creating a sort of mainframe that can think for itself.

Seeing Depp in an intense thinking man’s role over his more animated caricature stints is sure to be met with interest. Maybe a little Mort Rainey meets Donnie Brasco

Batman cast members joining Johnny Depp in Transcendence, New Mexico style

UPDATE 4/23/1013: Unofficial confirmation continues to roll in! This exceptional looking production IS NEW MEXICO bound!

Morgan Freeman Johnny Depp Cillian Murphy cast in Transcendence

As we first broke the news here, Johnny Depp is expected back in New Mexico for his upcoming film “Transcendence”. Though no official confirmation of the production making its way to the Land of Enchantment has been announced, lead casting details are abundant!

Cinemablend reports that Christopher Nolan’s BATMAN co-stars Morgan Freeman and Cillian Murphey have joined the cast of the film which is helmed by Wally Pfister, Nolan’s director of photography on the famed Dark Knight trilogy.

The cast rounds out with Rebecca Hall (Iron Man 3, The Town), Paul Bettany (Legion, Creation), Cory Hardrict (Battle Los Angeles, Gran Torino) and Kate Mara (127 Hours, Brokeback Mountain) to co-star.

Very little information has come out regarding the plot of the film, penned by Jack Paglen, except that its likely something of a sci-fi/fantasy, physiological drama in which “a scientist’s brain gets uploaded into a supercomputer with the aim of creating the world’s first machine that can think for itself”.

Production is expected to begin later this month for release on April 25, 2014.

Keep it here for what we hope will be an official word on at least some of the project getting underway here in NM!

In a far out blind item, we were recently hinting at rumblings that the biggest of biggies by way of global superstars, was possibly en route BACK to New Mexico!

Viggo Mortensen is Captain Fantastic – New Mexico Style

Posted by on April 22, 2014 | One comment

UPDATE 6/12/14: Filming is scheduled to begin, in New Mexico this August!

Viggo Mortensen in Captain Fantastic to film in New Mexico

Writer-director, Matt Ross has tapped a star for “Captain Fantastic”. In fact, much ado has been made of actor Viggo Mortensen taking up the lead in the upcoming film, here, here and here.

Now OHI can exclusively report that the off-the-grid drama will follow in the footsteps of another technology driven thriller which filmed right here in NM.

Like Wally Phister’s New Mexico film, “Transcendence”, “Captain Fantastic” looks like it will explore the intimacies and complications between humans and technology. Both films also share the distinction of being led by a film franchise star. Where Transcendence had Depp (Pirate’s of the Caribbean), Fantastic has The Lord of the Rings’ Aragorn – this time out as a father who will attempt to assimilate back into today’s technological world, after ten years living a disconnected mountain life with his six children.

New Mexico will share filming of Captain Fantastic with Washington State, as the mountains from which we’ll see Mortensen emerge from are those of the Pacific Northwest…

Matt Ross on Mortensen joining the film, to Deadline:

“Viggo Mortensen’s dedication to his craft and to the world of the story he’s telling have been an inspiration to me for years. There is a depth to his art that I greatly admire. Any film he’s in is a film I want to see. He’s one of the greats. Getting to collaborate with him on Captain Fantastic is quite literally the best thing that’s happened to me since my wife asked me to marry her.”

Lynette Howell and Jamie Patricof (The Place Beyond the Pines, Blue Valentine) will produce.

Production is set to start in early June.

Stay tuned!

Emily Blunt and Benicio del Toro to star in #NMFilm Sicario

Posted by on April 10, 2014 | One comment

Emily Blunt Benicio del toro starring in Sicaro will film in New Mexico

Last year Denis Villeneuve became a red hot commodity with the runaway success of his Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal dramatic thriller, Prisoners, which led Alcon Entertainment to seal a two year deal with the French-Candian writer/director.

The very latest product of that partnership is set to land in New Mexico in just a matter of months. A crime thriller, titled Sicario is slated for production in NM this June.

Earlier this month it was revealed that Villeneauve’s leading lady in the “tense Mexican border crime-drama”, will be Emily Blunt, who starred in the New Mexico film, Sunshine Cleaners back in 2008.

Blunt will play a police officer in the Southwest who crosses the border with a group of mercenaries to track down a dangerous drug lord (hint, not Walter White). The film is already getting a lot of early buzz due to Villeneauve’s attachment and for the gritty premise being heroine driven.

Alcon has been here before with 2010’s post-apocalyptic action film, The Book of Eli and the brand new Johnny Depp sci-fi/drama Transcendence.

And even before production is underway on Sicario there are rumblings all over the web, already looking forward to Villeneauve’s follow-up picture, The Story of Your Life, another sci-fi drama, this time led by Amy Adams, Blundt’s co-star in Sunshine.

How’s that for an #NMFilm string!

Related: Variety reports that Benicio del Toro is in final negotiations to co-star.

New Mexico Hot for TV

UPDATE 7/2/2013: Breaking Bad creator, Vince Gillagan says Saul Goodman Spinoff Moving ‘Full Speed Ahead’ -The Wrap TV

Breaking Bad Spin-off NBC Series Night Shift NMFilm

As the world anxiously awaits the final eight episodes of the “best show on television”, Breaking Bad fans are equally curious for the verdict on what comes next for cast & crew.

Even before we learn the fate of Walter White & Co. Br Ba devotees look forward to the most likely spin-off in which the best, slimiest, lawless lawyer around, Saul Goodman will once again ease all with, “Better Call Saul”.

Best news for New Mexico is that if a deal is indeed inked for the series, the most likely place for the Saul Goodman led series to take place would be original series home, Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Home to the AMC series, Albuquerque Studios (The Avengers, The Lone Ranger) is well seasoned and at the ready for the return of all things Saul.

Last fall NBC shot the gritty drama pilot “After Hours” across the interstate, as a prospect for last season’s television schedule. After not making the first cut, then being volleyed back and forth from the pick-up list to the tentative list, an off-cycle short order has been placed for at least four episodes of the show.

With a little tweek to the working title, from “After Hours” to “The Late Shift” production is scheduled to get back underway at I-25 Studios (Transcendence, Lone Survivor) later this summer!

And as we’ve previously reported, up north some very special goings-on are going on around the return of the A&E hit series, Longmire and the highly anticipated Seth MacFarlane adaptation of Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey for Fox television.

Oscars, Indies, Disney OH MY!

Posted by on March 7, 2013 | Comments Off on Oscars, Indies, Disney OH MY!

tommyleejoneslaughing

Remember Seth MacFarlane’s opening line at this year’s Academy Awards? “And the quest to make Tommy Lee Jones laugh starts now”. The funny man who the whole world was watching in that moment was of course addressing the Oscar winner’s semi-famous scowl at the infamously raucous Golden Globe Awards just weeks before.

Now guess who currently has a film in production right here in New Mexico. I’ll tell you that among the many, BOTH of the above do!

The uproarious Oscar host is hard at work on his first western comedy, A Million Ways to Die in the West right here in The Land of Enchantment, and his co-star is none other than Academy Award winner Charlize Theron, who has taken a star turn in New Mexico before in the heart achingly beautiful film, In the Valley of Elah, with then co-star Tommy Lee Jones.

Also included in the Oscar’s opening was another New Mexico filmer. Though not yet branded an Academy Award winner, Channing Tatum‘s impressive body of work swept not only Charlize Theron off her feet but the rest of the the global award show’s audience as well.

d235888003913550_charlize_channing_dancing-xxxlarge

And the New Mexico hits just kept coming throughout the broadcast as nominees, presenters and attendees with New Mexico ties continued to appear.

From Lone Survivor and 2 Guns star Mark Wahlberg presenting, to his Academy Award nominated 2 Guns co-star, Denzel Washington, who many New Mexicans were able to work alongside in both 2 Guns and 2009’s The Book of Eli.

On and on and on til the grand finale of the broadcast when NM’s favorite biology teacher turned drug kingpin, Bryan Cranston joined his fellow best motion picture winners on stage for his performance in Argo.

Independent films like Tommy Lee Jones’ current New Mexico project, The Homesman are quietly at work and even more quietly housing possible co-stars who are no strangers to the most coveted award in motion pictures. It is being reported that Oscar winners Hillary Swank and the one and only Meryl Streep are set to star with Jones in the central NM film.

In southern New Mexico a little thriller called, Enemy Way is getting underway starring Oscar winner Forest Whitaker. Also down south, indie “road film” The Run Away is currently in production.

Academy Award winner Natalie Portman may have skipped the big show this year, but the Thor actress isn’t missing out on another New Mexico project (Brothers, Thor) as she is here for her next film, Jane Got a Gun.

Lastly, when Disney’s Avengers hit the stage at the Oscars this year, you were looking at a whole gaggle of New Mexico Filmers…That’s right, lest you forget the biggest picture of last year was in majority filmed right here in New Mexico!

As we’ve reported many times before, Disney is no stranger to NM, and rumor has it that the first Avenger is likely to hit a soundstage near you for at least part of the current Captain America sequel.

tumblr_mi1pufDl5O1r7w64co1_500

Though all of Oscar’s audience didn’t get to gasp in awe like the Grammy audience was able to, when Johnny Depp showed-up at that awards show, film fans all over the world are bracing for the Depp led Disney movie adaptation of The Lone Ranger.

Last year’s NM production of the major motion picture will roll-out this summer showcasing its New Mexico roots. I can also tell you now, that while the Oscar parties rolled-on last month, rumors of a lock on Depp’s next picture making its way to NM were trickling in to us!

And just today Disney has announced plans for SEVERAL stand alone movies starring Star Wars characters…New Mexico, are you into it!?!
