SANTA FE— Residents of New Mexico have the opportunity to enter a filmmaking contest in which the winner receives $5,000 to produce a short film about human space exploration. The New Mexico Film Foundation, and space industry experts including astronaut Bruce McCandless II, the first person to walk in space untethered to a space vehicle, will evaluate the submissions and choose a winner.

EFT-1 will provide engineers with data about systems critical to crew safety in order to validate spacecraft designs before it begins carrying humans to new destinations in deep space. Lockheed Martin will share the winning film as part of its EFT-1 public outreach.

Are you, or do you know, a student who loves to work with video? If so, a local competition provides an opportunity for students to gain some solid experience and a notch in their portfolios — and maybe even win a prize.
The White Sands International Film Festival is hosting, for the second time, a contest for students to create a 30- or 60-second promotional video for the festival, slated for Sept. 3 to 7.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for students at all levels of the filmmaking process,” said David Salcido, the festival’s artistic director, in a press release.
The contest has three categories – middle school, high school and college – and includes students at public and private schools, universities and colleges.
Area students have until March 15 to create their spot for the 2014 White Sands International Film Festival. The film must include the official event logo, the festival dates, the location (Las Cruces) and the website, wsiff.com.

BRIAN SCOTT (Judge): Brian Scott is a country singer/ songwriter and restaurateur from New Mexico who found global fame when he won the 2009 Karaoke National Championship USA title with a rendition of Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind” that some judges claim was better than the original. He went on to place sixth in the world championships and has been tapped to be a judge at the worlds this year in Ireland.
Our “cowboy karaoke” judge, Brian has first-hand experience of the pressure our contestants are under.
