It’s lights, camera, Cranston and much much more for “Better Call Saul”

Better Call Saul Billboard in Albuquerque Image via Twitter

While insiders have confirmed with OHI that Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul is on the roster to appear in the show’s upcoming prequel “Better Call Saul”, speculation abounds about which other cast and production members are or might be attached.

Saul Goodman née James McGill, beloved Mike Ehrmantraut and at least a glimpse of Jesse Pinkman are mounting reasons why Bad fans the world over are itching for the “early 2015″ debut. Filming is meticulously underway in Albuquerque where the tiniest glimpses of what can be expected are coming to light. And what’s coming to light is that the BCS team is tight and right.

By his own account the bump from a November 2014 premiere into 2015 is due to Vince Gilligan’s producing and directing style being “slow as mud”, so says the Bad creator himself who continued, “I still feel I’m very slow for television”, at the recent Television Critics Association.

Slow and steady she goes, by all ground accounts here in the ABQ, Saul co-creators Gilligan and Peter Gould are hard at work carefully crafting the kind of darkly comedic drama that has the masses addicted to their work.

And what of the at first haphazard chem teacher turned drug kingpin? Like Aaron Paul, Bryan Cranston has purportedly been attached to the new show, but not only with a possible turn as either Heisenberg and/or Mr. White in the series’ flexi-time-line, but behind the camera as an episode DIRECTOR.

Cranston directed episodes of Breaking Bad (Blood Money, No Más, Seven Thirty-Seven), an episode each of The Office and Modern Family, and seven episodes of Malcolm in the Middle, with feature film direction under his belt in the 1999 film, Last Chance, which he also wrote and starred in.

Any way you look at it this series is shaping up to be another WINNER.

Watch for the television production family that spawned Saul on the 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards show, airing Monday August 25 on NBC, where Breaking Bad has been nominated one last time for a whopping 16 Emmys.

12 Monkeys TV Series Pilot

12 Monkeys TV Series in New Mexico

The Syfy network is looking to expand its original programming lineup with a possible 8 to 10 episode run of a time travel thriller based on Terry Gilliam‘s acclaimed 1995 film, 12 Monkeys in which:

“An unknown and lethal virus has wiped out five billion people in 1996. Only 1% of the population has survived by the year 2035, and is forced to live underground. A convict (James Cole) reluctantly volunteers to be sent back in time to 1996 to gather information about the origin of the epidemic (who he’s told was spread by a mysterious “Army of the Twelve Monkeys”) and locate the virus before it mutates so that scientists can study it. Unfortunately Cole is mistakenly sent to 1990, six years earlier than expected, and is arrested and locked up in a mental institution, where he meets Dr. Kathryn Railly, a psychiatrist, and Jeffrey Goines, the insane son of a famous scientist and virus expert.”

-Giancarlo Cairella

The pilot purchased for development by Syfy has been scripted by Travis Fickett and Terry Matalas, and is set to pick-up where the original film left off.

Jon Cassar will direct production for Atlas Entertainment and Universal Cable Productions.

Filming is rumored to take place right here in New Mexico where the Syfy series Stargate Universe was shot back in 2009 and 2010.

Michael Douglas sets the scene with this quick pic from the New Mexico set of his latest film, “The Reach”.

The Academy Award winning actor is playing Madec, an arrogant businessman and big game hunter in pursuit of his ultimate prize who hires a young guide, played by Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) to lead him into the American desert. After Madec shoots and kills an innocent man, a game of cat-and-mouse unfolds when the guide refuses to take part in a cover-up.

The film is based on Robb White’s 1972 novel Deathwatch.

The New Mexico production will employ 160 local crew members and 60 local actors and extras, according to the New Mexico Film Office.

New Mexico Hot for TV

UPDATE 7/2/2013: Breaking Bad creator, Vince Gillagan says Saul Goodman Spinoff Moving ‘Full Speed Ahead’ -The Wrap TV

Breaking Bad Spin-off NBC Series Night Shift NMFilm

As the world anxiously awaits the final eight episodes of the “best show on television”, Breaking Bad fans are equally curious for the verdict on what comes next for cast & crew.

Even before we learn the fate of Walter White & Co. Br Ba devotees look forward to the most likely spin-off in which the best, slimiest, lawless lawyer around, Saul Goodman will once again ease all with, “Better Call Saul”.

Best news for New Mexico is that if a deal is indeed inked for the series, the most likely place for the Saul Goodman led series to take place would be original series home, Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Home to the AMC series, Albuquerque Studios (The Avengers, The Lone Ranger) is well seasoned and at the ready for the return of all things Saul.

Last fall NBC shot the gritty drama pilot “After Hours” across the interstate, as a prospect for last season’s television schedule. After not making the first cut, then being volleyed back and forth from the pick-up list to the tentative list, an off-cycle short order has been placed for at least four episodes of the show.

With a little tweek to the working title, from “After Hours” to “The Late Shift” production is scheduled to get back underway at I-25 Studios (Transcendence, Lone Survivor) later this summer!

And as we’ve previously reported, up north some very special goings-on are going on around the return of the A&E hit series, Longmire and the highly anticipated Seth MacFarlane adaptation of Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey for Fox television.

When the backdrop is our glorious New Mexico vistas, the story is the compelling account of real-life heroes in battle, direction by Peter Berg, cast of Hollywood A-listers and actual Military Veterans, movie magic happens…New Mexico style!

Here for your viewing pleasure is a slue of set pics that have come in, from a very special stint that NMFilm “Lone Survivor” cast & crew spent on location at a New Mexico Air Force Base, on and around Veterans Day!

Cast members including Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Eric Bana, Ben Foster, Alexander Ludwig and Sammy Sheik have been in New Mexico since late September filming Peter Berg’s adaptation of the book by Marcus Luttrell.

Luttrell (pictured below with NM native, actor Jerry Angelo) literally wrote the book, Lone Survivor based on the 2005 Military Operation known as Operation Red Wings in which, “a four-man Navy SEAL team consisting of Lt. Michael Murphy, and petty officers Danny Dietz, Matthew Axelson and Marcus Luttrell departed for a reconnaissance mission high in the Hindu Kush Mountains near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. The team’s target was Ahmad Shah, a local terrorist leader with close ties to Bin Laden who led a group of insurgents referred to as the “Mountain Tigers”. Five days after insertion, Luttrell was the only SEAL to make it out alive.”

In June Luttrell is quoted as saying, “I want to make sure that the movie is true to the book. Most people get their information from movies and TV and don’t read so I want to make sure this movie is as realistic as possible.” – Luttrell to Blackfive.net

“Lone Survivor” is scheduled for release in early 2013…

Stan Lee Tweets on Johnny Depp in #ABQ

Posted by on June 12, 2012 | Comments Off

Was Johnny Depp at this weekend’s Albuquerque Comic-Expo? Fellow film star and comic legend The Real Stan Lee was!

While Stan Lee made his highly anticipated appearance at the Expo this weekend, rumors swirled on the floor of the convention center when attendees began to whisper that The Lone Ranger star may have made his disguised way through the crowds.

From the top of the comic-book world totem pole, Lee tweeted graciousness toward Depp who is filming TLR in the Q with:

We purposely came to #Albuquerque late, ‘cause I knew #JohnnyDepp was shooting here today, and I didn’t want to have all the attention of everybody taken away from him and centered on me… And I thought that was the least I could do for a fellow movie star.
-The Real Stan Lee

If you found yourself oddly taken with a “mad hatted”, grey bearded chap at Sunday’s Expo, you may have been comic-crazed face to superstar and newly anointed Comanche, disguised face with Johnny Depp! Did you see him there? Some OHI readers think they did.

Who and what will be spotted getting their COSMIC on at the upcoming Roswell Cosmic-con & Film Festival??? Perhaps a Foo or two? How killer would a Depp Foo jam be any day of the week!?!?

Johnny Depp Adopted as Comanche in New Mexico

Posted by on May 22, 2012 | 4 comments

INTRODUCING Mah Woo May, the Comanche name given to Johnny Depp, which translates to, “Shape Shifter”.

Sure as the casting of Johnny Depp in the upcoming Bruckheimer/Verbinski film adaptation of The Lone Ranger as the Native American character, Tonto drew fire, so might this move by The Comanche Nation.

Regardless of critics, artistic interpretation/representation met history, culture, unity and family when the world famous actor was formally adopted into the Comanche Nation at a private ceremony in Albuquerque, NM last week.

Pictured above with President and Founder of Americans for Indian Opportunity, LaDonna Harris.

No such hullabaloo is or has been raised about the Lone, Texas born, Ranger himself being portrayed by a hunky Californian

Depp’s equine accident on the set of The Lone Ranger

Posted by on May 11, 2012 | Comments Off

Johnny Depp says a horse saved his life.

The 48-year-old actor was thrown from the powerful animal while filming forthcoming Western movie ‘The Lone Ranger’ but he believes the strong bond he forged with the creature made it react instinctively to ensure his fall wasn’t as bad as it could have been.

Johnny – who plays the Lone Ranger’s Native American sidekick Tonto – said: “I’m lucky to be here. I’ve done a number of films on horseback and I’ve taken a couple of spills but this was a violent one.

“I had a good relationship with the horse, which was named Scout, and when I look at the tape I can see that Scout saved my life.

“I went down badly and I was dragged for 25 yards and in the end the horse just jumped over me and clipped me with his back legs.”

Despite being a huge star, the ‘Dark Shadows’ actor insists he isn’t a very ambitious person and doesn’t choose his roles by guessing how successful they might be.

When he embarked on his acting career, Johnny – who has children Lily-Rose, 12, and 10-year-old Jack with partner Vanessa Paradis – just wanted to be able to look back on his body of work and be proud of it.

He added in an interview with the Daily Mirror newspaper: “I never knew where I was going to go. I never really thought about where any of it was going.

“I only knew that, regardless of success or failure, I always wanted to some day be able to look back and go, ‘I did alright. I’m proud of what I did. I didn’t sell out.’

“I’ve never felt particularly ambitious or driven, although I like to create stuff, whether it’s a little doodle, a drawing, a small painting or a movie or a piece of music, so I suppose I’m driven by that. Everything I’ve done has felt natural.”

Johnny Depp’s Tonto: Navajo Nation

Posted by on April 13, 2012 | 4 comments

Badass Digest, by way of their tipsters on the world wide web, lands this EPIC pic of Johnny Depp, once again in costume as the Native American character Tonto, à la Disney’s The Lone Ranger.

Pictured with the Surgeon General of Navajo Nation, Dr. Gayle Dine’Chacon in Monument Valley today, this candid shot lends a more live-action look to the storied character as portrayed by the legendary actor.

A hot spot for some pretty sterile shots of the production as they happen is the film’s über producer’s twitter page here.

The Lone Ranger production, based out of Albuquerque, New Mexico is slated to continue through August – with additional locations, such as this in Utah and Colorado, scheduled for a May 31, 2013 release!
