Star Wars in 2013: New Mexico is Sand Farm Ready

Posted by on November 28, 2012 | Comments Off

Personally, I like what Disney has done with their purchase of New York City…ABC is doing quite well, and I have no doubt that if a port for Disney Cruise Lines in New Mexico would suit them, the Walt Disney Company could pull it off!

I have long been awaiting a sizable investment in the Land of Enchantment by the multinational mass media conglomerate. After all we have seen them here, from the Avengers to The Lone Ranger, Disney has built it and COME!

With the recent purchase of all things Lucas how long will it be until we’re all suited-up in our Storm Trooper best? Hell, most of us are replete with prêt-à-porter Tatooine garb!

We’ve also got no shortage of Fanbois and girls (both domestic and imported)! From our ever growing and increasingly acclaimed Comic & Sci-fi Conventions to the long lived lore of being the birthplace of the Alien Autopsy, we are proudly geekcentric!

Now that the rumblings have begun, via the inbox@oneheadlightink.com, that the Imperial scout-abouts have landed in NM, every Star Warsophile should sit-up and take notice!

Don’t blow this one Susana…

The Avengers New Mexico Premiere

Posted by on April 6, 2012 | One comment

“Albuquerque, N.M., will also receive an advanced [sic] screening due to filming that took place there as well.”

Well hell New Mexico, whatta ya’ know? While local news is quick to report that the country is in a race to procure a pre-screening of NM’s Own (in-part), Marvel’s AVENGERS, per the AP wire pickup:

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Facebook fans are getting an early shot to see the all-star superhero tale “The Avengers.”

Disney’s Marvel Studios announced Monday that it will offer advance screenings around the world in cities where “The Avengers” has gained the most fans on Facebook.

Early screenings will start with shows in Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, Houston and Miami on April 14, nearly three weeks before the film’s May 4 U.S. debut. Admission will be free, first-come, first-served.

Marvel plans another round of early screenings in five more cities. Fans can lobby for their city on “The Avengers” Facebook page.

“The Avengers” features Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johannson, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner.

…Cleveland’s own NewsNet5 (begrudgingly) reports:

“Albuquerque, N.M., will also receive an advanced screening due to filming that took place there as well.”

Mayhem, Disney, NM! Oh My!

Posted by on November 9, 2011 | Comments Off

Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray, the Mayhem Pictures producing team behind such films as “Secretariat,” “Invincible,” “Miracle” and “The Rookie” have been taken back into the fold of the immense, all powerful Disney company.

The pair have inked the dotted line extending their first-look deal with the mouse house, granting the studio right of first refusal for developing Mayhem Pictures upcoming projects.

With the success of their sports themed, feel-good movies under their Mayhem Pictures co. belt, Variety reports that Ciardi and Gray are also “branching out into other genres with the Reese Witherspoon comedy “Wish List” and fantasy series “Fallen,” based on the young adult book series by Lauren Kate.”

Mucho mas importantly, among the 11 titles Mayem has in development, the upcoming action thriller “Protection“, starring Dwayne Johnson, has been slated to shoot right here in New Mexico…now the watch is on for whether or not that or any of the other flicks they’re expected to churn out will indeed land here in the Land of Enchantment or if they’ll fall through our cracks into the waiting film communities of Louisiana, North Carolina, etc.

Creole Ranger Away – Bruckheimer Talks Taking Tonto to Louisiana

Posted by on October 19, 2011 | One comment

You can take the Native American out of Tonto, but can you take the West out of this western?

The Lone Ranger project has been all but laid to rest once already, to that end producers are now addressing ongoing budgetary concerns. Specifically, Jerry Bruckheimer deconstructs the approximate $10M price slash for The Hollywood Reporter, including the back-and-forth possibility of breaking-up the NM portion of the shoot, hauling it out of the West and into Louisiana where incentives are higher.

“We redid the production plan. We originally laid it out to avoid winter. Every single location we had, there was winter — 30s at night, 50s during the day, best-case scenario. We were jumping around. California, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah. If we had a big crowd scene and then the next day we were shooting just Tonto and the Lone Ranger, we still had the crew “on” because you have them weekly. So we bunched the sequences that were big together, and for the smaller scenes [we] laid off the extras, the effects people, the makeup people. It costs an enormous amount with 150 extras on the set. It’s not the extras, it’s the people that support the extras. You’re still carrying all the wardrobe, makeup and hair people. We bunched together scenes with Tonto and the Lone Ranger, so we had a much smaller crew. We saved about $10 million just by doing that.

Then we looked for the best break in tax incentives. We found that Louisiana gave us a better tax incentive than New Mexico — that was another $8 million. We’re still shooting in New Mexico, and we might [also] go to Louisiana. We’re asking New Mexico to come closer to the Louisiana incentive.

We dropped our California location not because they didn’t offer a tax break but because it was another production office that we had to open. Every time you have a new location, you have to use crew time setting it up for you. There are a lot of expenses.”

Bring it all the way home New Mexico, get a piece of this epic Disney Western with some back-end action or something in exchange for meeting the request…Keep our hotels loaded, tourists coming and our cast & crews employed…and maybe a little global PR to follow, so maybe the rest of the country learns in this century that NM is part of the continental UNITED STATES AND that we have better skiing than AZ.

N. Mex has already lost Quentin Tarantino’s Spaghetti Western Django Unchained starring Leonardo DiCaprio, NM Fave Samuel L. Jackson and Christoph Waltz, which starts shooting this November in NOLA.

Thanks Chris

ABC Hit Series Revenge Has NM in the House

Posted by on October 14, 2011 | One comment

Mickey Mouse likes the house that New Mexico built. Disney is the parent co. to ABC, ABC Family, ~Dreamworks and Marvel, all of whish (Messican typo, that stays) have worked NM productions – from multiple television pilots, tv movies, to a couple lil’ family films like Thor and The Avengers.

Now ABC has a budding prime-time drama series hit on their hands that has some NM paw prints all over it.

Series star, Emily Van Camp is a NM movie vet with her work on the Hallmark Hall of Fame movie Beyond the Blackboard. As we told you here the sweet hometown boy in the show is played by NM native Nick Wechsler. And as we’ve been following here, we anxiously await the directorial debut of Revenge villainess vixen extraordinairess, Madeline Stowe – which is slated to bring WOLVERINE and Edward/Jacob or whoever Robert Pattinson plays in Twilight to New Mexico!

So ICYMI: The show is awesome and easily scores a 4 on the Scoville Scale of hotness for its New Mexico connections alone and a solid 10 for its viewability – LOVE IT!

Happy NEW Yo! Silver Will Ride JAN. 2012

Posted by on October 5, 2011 | Comments Off

The most trusted website on the internets (not really) is reporting that Johnny Depp will take a big pay cut to film “The Lone Ranger”.

Walt Disney Pictures has come to financial terms with producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Gore Verbinski, Johnny Depp, and other key members of the cast and crew of “The Lone Ranger”. Changes include a reduction in the budget from $250 million to approximately $200 million. Filming will still take place in New Mexico, with some additional filming in Utah instead of Texas as originally planned. The film’s remaining supporting cast are still being cast in Los Angeles, and smaller speaking roles, extras, stand-ins, and photo-doubles for the film’s stars are being cast in New Mexico and Utah.

There had been a huge extras casting call scheduled in Silver City, New Mexico on August 21, 2011. Disney pulled the plug just one week before the call was to take place. The studio claimed that the budget was just too high. Director Gore Verbinski had already finalized the shooting script and signed on his lead actors, Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp – both of which would have to be paid whether the project went further or not. The Screen Actors Guild never removed “The Lone Ranger” from it’s (sic) production list, leading to speculation that this delay has been nothing more that a ploy by the studio to get the budget reduced by $50 million.

In addition to cast and crew changes, other cuts include reducing the amount of CGI effects, and vendors working on the film such as special effects houses and even hotels have agreed to accept reduced guaranteed fees in order to assure that the costs of the production remain acceptable to the studio. There was also several pricey steam locomotive train sequences that were to be in the film, but have now been cancelled to further cut costs.

Annnd THE LONE RANGER RIDES AGAIN!!!

Posted by on September 23, 2011 | 6 comments

As I guaranteed your Depp loving souls (and here Johnny himself cooed words of comfort)…

MULTIPLE outlets are reporting, and Deadline gets the scoop, with “sources close to the production” saying that Disney WILL in fact ride with The Lone Ranger, including the coveted Johnny Depp as Tonto, cost-cutting director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer still on board.

The budget overhaul that’s been in the works for weeks is said to be trimmed by over $30M, opening-up the horizon for an expected early Q1 2012 production start…

Disney Drama in the Desert: Hi-Yo Whoa!

Posted by on August 13, 2011 | 3 comments

UPDATE 08/14/11: #ontherecord The Lone Ranger WILL RIDE, New Mexico style! “I guarantee it.” Joe Namath style! So says I.

UPDATE 08/17/11:

“I think everything will work out as it should,”
- Johnny Depp

…on the fate of NM’s Own Lone Ranger amid current “reports” that budget rebuilding talks are underway to commence on the production since calls for its “break-down” last week…”crew was told Wednesday night to hold off on tearing down a Western town set that had been built for the production in New Mexico”.

Disney has officially strapped-on its fancy dancin’ spurs and is really kickin’ things up something fierce.

In events reminiscent of the great (Disney née Marvel) Avengers script debacle of…well, earlier this year, reports began flooding the web (and our inbox) Friday night that the great Mouse House in the sky is saying neigh nay to the sky-high price tag on the Gore Verbinski sure to be epic version of The Lone Ranger starring the anything but cheap as he is valuable Johnny Depp and the incomparable Helena Bonham Carter (plus that doubly hot guy Armie Hammer as the masked man himself).

If a ruckus is required to balance that budget and/or to keep the already globaly amped-up buzz about this film rolling to achieve rolling tape…then we’re well on our way…Almost as soon as the PRODUCTION SHUT-DOWN NEWS hit the wires like some unholy gale force wall of New Mexico grown tumbleweeds VARIETY was quick to report that “sources close to the production” are saying whoa silver! The film “is far from dead”.

As any “skilled rider” will tell ya’ a little, “easy, easy, there big fella” can go a long way…so New Mexico may well keep hold of the mouse in our house as this story is just getting started! Giddyup!

And I say again (I’m looking at you New Mexico Tourism), let the Kid rest in peace we’ve got real life (south)western dramz hitting the global market on the regular!
