After much ado about casting and re-casting, in round three of who will kick-up some dust and dig in his spurs opposite Oscar winner Natalie Portman in her New Mexico western “Jane Got a Gun”, her Star Wars co-star Ewan McGregor has come into focus!
Both are experienced in NM filming as Portman has been here for both “Thor” and “Brothers”, and McGregor starred in “Men Who Stare at Goats” back in and returned with Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender and Gina Carano for “Haywire”.
As everyone knows all too well nothing is confirmed until all hands are on deck, all stars are on their mark and the director yells, ACTION!
So here’s to a great shoot for all involved, how ever things fall out on this and every AWESOME production rolling right now here in New Mexico!
Some tips don’t pan out, some leads don’t come to fruition, but we’re happy to report that today’s announcement from the powers that be indicate our cross-sourced, hot topic of late has been deemed official! WOOT!
SANTA FE —New Mexico Film Office director Nick Maniatis announced today that the high-profile action drama JANE GOT A GUN is shooting in New Mexico starring Oscar winner Natalie Portman (Black Swan, V for Vendetta), Australian actor Joel Edgerton (Warrior, the upcoming The Great Gatsby), Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook, The Hangover), Noah Emmerich (The Truman Show, The Americans), and Brazilian actor Rodrigo Santoro (300: Rise of an Empire, Rio). The production will employ approximately 100 New Mexico crew members, including New Mexico resident and Unit Production Manager Alton Walpole (Crazy Heart, The Book of Eli) and over 400 New Mexico principals and background talent, including James Burnett (The Last Stand, Longmire), Sam Quinn, graduate of the Santa Fe University of Art and Design and River Shields (Beyond the Blackboard, Reunion). Gavin O’Connor, who directed Nick Nolte to an Oscar nomination in the action picture Warrior and Janet McTeer to a Golden Globe win in the drama Tumbleweeds, is directing. JANE GOT A GUN is being produced by Scott Pictures’ Scott Steindorff (The Lincoln Lawyer, The Human Stain) along with Portman, through her Handsomecharlie Films, Brillstein Entertainment partner Aleen Keshishian (Our Idiot Brother, Hesher), 1821 Pictures’ Terry Dougas (Swing Vote, The Invention of Lying), and Scott LaStaiti (Love in the Time of Cholera, Turistas). Rumors are swirling about who will step in to replace Jude Law in the upcoming Natalie Portman western “Jane Got a Gun”…but has anyone thought that it may be TWO of the a fore mentioned studs instead of just one????
L’est we forget that there’s more than just one vacancy left after the upheaval resulting from a certain director’s direct exit from the film…as we alluded to here, prior to that directorial mess, a genuine scheduling conflict caused a leading man void in the Portman produced pelicula.
IF anyone has ever taken a word of my advice on what a riveting film NM’s Own 2009 “Brothers” was, they’ll know that both Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal are a natural fit to work with Portman, and as for Jeff Bridges…well, CRAZY HEART!!!! Need I say more? If so, how ’bout a little film called “True Grit”, starring the naturally dreamy and perfectly aged Jeff Bridges!
Finally I’d be remiss if I didn’t disclose that Bridges’ co-star in Grit, none other than THE Matt Damon of the long ago NM Film, “All the Pretty Horses” is, as of this writing, a scheduling clear contender…
Of course it will be no surprise if none of the above make it to set, as is the world of movie making…maybe one of the locals can take a stab at one or two of the vacant roles on this pic.
Meanwhile, word on the wire is that another long lived leading man is recently signed on for a yet to be announced NM western, namely one Kurt Russell who is said to be on board with “Bone Tomahawk”, led by Timothy Olyphant (Justified) and Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter).
Keep your ears to the grindstone my friends, New Mexico’s Summer shoot schedule is set to be a bumpy ride!

Jane Got a Gun stars NMFilm actress Natalie Portman (Thor, Brothers) and Michael Fassbender who just recently wrapped the NMFilm “Frank”. Both are hot off their co-starring roles in the yet to be titled Terrence Malick film which was shot in Austin, TX last fall.
In Jane Got a Gun, Portman plays the title character – a woman whose outlaw husband returns home shot with eight bullets and barely alive, Jane reluctantly reaches out to an ex-lover (Fassbender) who she hasn’t seen in over ten years to help her defend her farm when the time comes that her husband’s gang eventually tracks him down to finish the job.
As we reported to you here first, Oscar winning actress Natalie Portman would be headed back to film New Mexico for the upcoming drama, Jane Got a Gun.
This will be the third NM film in recent years for the Thor (2011) and Brothers (2009) actress. The latter co-starring iconic, indie darling, Jake Gyllenhaal.
Jakey’s equally iconic and critically revered, sister/actress Maggie Gyllenhaal is too headed for a repeat visit to NM, following-up her role in New Mexico Film, Crazy Heart back in 2008, Maggie is back NOW to star in, Frank.
Jane Got a Gun will strike-up filming this spring. Downtown Albuquerque is currently bracing for Frank to start rolling this week!!!
Wonder if Natalie will be back to NM yet again to reprise her role as Queen Amidala????
The beautiful and talented Natalie Portman is no stranger to NM.
It was here, while she was busy catching the eye of ““Thor”“, that Santa Fean’s caught the starlet out and about. And in northern N.M., Portman delivered a heart wrenching performance along with her equally riveting co-stars, Tobey McGuire and Jake Gyllenhaal in 2009’s “Brothers”.
Now the Oscar winner is set to produce and star in the upcoming Western, “Jane Got a Gun”.
Buzz on the wire is that Michael Fassbender is also in for a leading role in the project. Off the wire, the buzz is the possibility of the film landing in NM for at least part of its early 2013 production.
According to the Hollywood Reporter:
Jane Got a Gun centers on a woman whose outlaw husband returns home riddled with bullet wounds and barely alive. When her husband’s gang eventually tracks him down to finish the job, she is forced to reach out to an ex-lover and ask if he will help defend her farm.
Not since Deney Terrio threw on Joe Picopo’s Dead Heat mullet wig for pickups in the Flashdance finale was there this much hullabaloo over exactly whose’s bits are doing what during an on-screen dance saga.
The Ballerina who stood-in for Natalie Portman for the highly contested, yet to be determined percentage of her dance routines during Black Swan continues to level claims that accounts of Natalie’s dance abilities are greatly exaggerated. Portman’s choreographer/fiancee, director, and co-stars are coming to her defense. WTFC? CNN, really?
Hos and cinema are much more technologically savvy these days. There may very well be better worked, more hard fought battles during post-production that don’t scream at the audience, like the barely computer generated ~graphics work on Kate Bosworth, in the legendary Blue Crush, that they are only barely trying to play magic tricks on our eyes for the price of admission (plus the cost of 3D glasses in some cases).
However, such advances may also be one reason why a scorned woman’s wrath could too be on the rise in its reach and potency.
And whatever the hell is in the craw of this trick Sarah Lane it doesn’t seem like it’s going to stop until God knows what vindication is hers.
Me thinks a certain ballerina really needs to up her daily dosage of surely already high fiber and let classic dances lie (you too J-Lo, oops too late).
Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall – New Mexico is for Coupling! So much so that Han Solo chose to finally make Ally McBeal his bride here and the pretty birdie now known as Black Swantastic is betrothed AND knocked-up after catching smootches with her on and off screen love interest in the Fe as we brought you here…
Even the mighty Thor himself, who surely danced some New Mexico nights fantastic with his Spanish lady love is now HITCHED!
These aren’t the only A+++ listers getting their lurve on in NM. The sexy duo of Channing and Jenna Dewan-Tatum have loved-it-up in the Fe as well! And they’re back currently filming Ten Year with a whole gaggle of Hollywood hipsters in the Q!
Some escándaloso lovers like Cowboys & Aliens’ Daniel Craig is coming out of the closet as the new love of Rachel Weisz, whose new movie like her new love is said to be New Mexico unBOUND!
New Mexico is becoming quite a couples paradise or at least haven as big films and their super stars come to work in the Land of Enchantment their lovers come out to visit.
Some endings are happier than others, but we’re happy to play host and haven to celebrity folk amor!
