New Mexico Education Rally Shakes the Roundhouse NMLeg

“It’s been over five years since teachers have had any kind of a raise, and in fact their paychecks have gone down, as we have also paid more into retirement and insurance,”

Rally at the Roundhouse Take Back our Schools

Another key issue is state versus local control of education money…it is better for local schools to determine spending because each school and district has its own set of needs, which may not fit into the state’s one-size-fits-all education model. – Public News Service

NM’s Own: Best Costume Edition

Best Costume Winner - Hanna Skandera Halloween Costume

One Headlight Ink’s first annual COSTUME OF THE YEAR AWARD goes to “Hanna Skandera”, whipping teachers and ignoring students with her weapon of choice, “The Evaluator” – 50% testing (Scan-Trons), 40% red tape (evaluations), 10% attendance. Whippah!

Join the movement to communicate to our Governor that her un-confirmed pet appointee is sucking the life out of our state’s great teachers and marginalizing our children with her profiteering and pandering to corporate interests – who are buying her off in exchange for driving our teachers and children into the ground.

MindUP™ New Mexico

Goldie Hawn in Ruidoso New MexicoEugene Heathman/Ruidoso Free Press

Social media was abuzz this weekend when in the heart of Hollywood, New Mexico aka Ruidoso some recognizable faces were spotted out and about in the area this Labor Day Weekend.

Hometown girl and Voice contestant Tawnya Reynolds made a few appearances, Rick Springfield was in town, and one particularly bubbly blonde known and loved the world over brought her specially cultivated brand of curriculum to Ruidoso; as Goldie Hawn works to implement her foundation’s educational focus to rural New Mexico classrooms.

The actress, director, producer presents MindUP™, “a very distinctly clinical, scientific and physiological focus on taking the peaks and valleys from the daily learning cycle and applying them to everyday life.” Hawn tells the Ruidoso Free Press, “MindUP™ engages the students, teachers and especially the parents into better ways for conditioning the brain to learn with enthusiasm”.

The program has students take time at the beginning and end of each day to focus on their breathing, where Hawn says, “Today like never before, our little ones are challenged with incredible amounts of stress and distractions, impeding learning and ultimately impacting their ability to achieve success and happiness in life,” The practices aim to nurture optimism and happiness in the classroom, help eliminate bullying and aggression, increase empathy and compassion, while resolving peer conflicts in schools.

MindUP™ is the result of a 10 year of collaboration between the Hawn Foundation, neuroscientists, educators, psychologists and experts in the field of mindful awareness training which serves thousands of children globally each year, preparing children to be able to navigate 21st century challenges while maximizing opportunities for success in life.
Thanks DL
