NMFilm Manhattan

A world at war, faceless dangers half the globe away, and threats of universal dominance by an alliance of untold magnitude, are what teams of top physicists, mathematicians, and engineers faced in defending allies from tyrannical rule in the 1940s.

As we told you here WGN America is taking that tumultuous time in real world history and scripting it into a new drama series. Now HOT off the wire this week is the news that the 13 series order will go forward with production right here in New Mexico in the upcoming winter months, as expected.

Created by Sam Shaw (Masters of Sex), “Manhattan” is set against the backdrop of the clandestine mission of the same name to build the world’s first atomic bomb in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The storyline follows the brilliant but flawed scientists and their families as they attempt to co-exist in a world where secrets and lies infiltrate every aspect of their lives.

Shaw will write and executive produce with David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross. Emmy-winning director Thomas Schlamme (The West Wing) will direct and executive produce the production.

“Sam and Tommy’s (Schlamme) passion for the world of Los Alamos, the Manhattan Project, and the characters who populate it came through from the moment we all sat down to discuss the project, and we couldn’t be more excited to support them as they bring their vision to life,” WGN America president Matt Cherniss told Deadline Hollywood adding, “We feel Manhattan has all of the elements to make for a provocative and memorable series…”

Stay tuned…

ABC’s Killer Women to shoot in ABQ

Posted by on August 22, 2013 | 3 comments

UPDATE 8/23/13: It looks like your local casting connection for this New Mexico production will be Kiira Arai Casting LLC. Keep up to date with her casting announcements here.

NEW MEXICO BOUND – From executive producer Sofia Vergara comes the ABC midseason series pick-up, Killer Women. Filling the gaps before the Fall start of longstanding ABC hits, Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, Nashville and Once Upon a Time, will be a bevy of new series in lieu of the outdated practice of simply airing repeats.

The ABC pilot of Killer Women was shot in Texas, the show’s backdrop, but will move regular production to Albuquerque next month.

Along with the NBC show, The Night Shift, now in production in Albuquerque, this series marks an important upturn for procedural television for the New Mexico film industry – the local economic impact and worldwide acclaim of which can no longer be denied. And with the recent wrap of the state’s most successful television series to date, AMC’s Breaking Bad, the ABC production is a welcome addition – hot on the heels of another series stand-in, as northern New Mexico has had a very successful run portraying Wyoming in two full seasons of the A&E hit series Longmire.

According to the New Mexico film office, the production will employ more than 150 New Mexico crew members and more than 250 actors and extras. The female led show centers on Molly Parker, played by Tricia Helfer (Two and a Half Men, Tron: Uprising, The Firm), the only woman in the notoriously male Texas Rangers, “a ballsy, beautiful badass who knows how to get to the truth and isn’t afraid to ruffle a few feathers on her way there.” – per IMDb.

Marc Blucas (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Michael Trucco (Castle, How I Met Your Mother, Revenge), Alex Fernandez (Mistresses, Devious Maids, Dallas) and Marta Milans (Valientes, The American Experience) round out the cast.

Killer Women will begin filming in Albuquerque and surrounding areas in September.

Extras and Background Casting details to follow…

New Mexico Hot for TV

UPDATE 7/2/2013: Breaking Bad creator, Vince Gillagan says Saul Goodman Spinoff Moving ‘Full Speed Ahead’ -The Wrap TV

Breaking Bad Spin-off NBC Series Night Shift NMFilm

As the world anxiously awaits the final eight episodes of the “best show on television”, Breaking Bad fans are equally curious for the verdict on what comes next for cast & crew.

Even before we learn the fate of Walter White & Co. Br Ba devotees look forward to the most likely spin-off in which the best, slimiest, lawless lawyer around, Saul Goodman will once again ease all with, “Better Call Saul”.

Best news for New Mexico is that if a deal is indeed inked for the series, the most likely place for the Saul Goodman led series to take place would be original series home, Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Home to the AMC series, Albuquerque Studios (The Avengers, The Lone Ranger) is well seasoned and at the ready for the return of all things Saul.

Last fall NBC shot the gritty drama pilot “After Hours” across the interstate, as a prospect for last season’s television schedule. After not making the first cut, then being volleyed back and forth from the pick-up list to the tentative list, an off-cycle short order has been placed for at least four episodes of the show.

With a little tweek to the working title, from “After Hours” to “The Late Shift” production is scheduled to get back underway at I-25 Studios (Transcendence, Lone Survivor) later this summer!

And as we’ve previously reported, up north some very special goings-on are going on around the return of the A&E hit series, Longmire and the highly anticipated Seth MacFarlane adaptation of Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey for Fox television.

Click here to reach legislators in your area and voice your opinion on this issue.

Audit this: While Los Angeles scrambles to intice productions back from us, other states Hot on our Boot Heel and yet others stalling like Arizona, Massachusets and Iowa, New Mexico who currently ranks NUMBER ONE in the country for film making and third in ALL OF NORTH AMERICA, is presented with a dangerous proposal from our new leader.

If Dennis the Menace down in Roswell gets his way our tax incentive program will be eliminated all together and if Governor Susana Martinez can’t see that pushed through she’s working the 10% decrease angle. It’s a tumultuous mix of options being thrown into the wind that will blow New Mexico’s promising future as an Entertainment Capital out of here like Silicon Valley.

The numbers can be manipulated to high heaven in favor of decreasing the incentives and with that rot down the hell of disillusionment and hopelessness unto the impassioned and currently employed and empowered people of New Mexico who have fought and worked so hard to see the fruits of the Industry begin to flourish here.

We cannot allow Texas or any other state to turn New Mexico into their cotton picking, chile peeling back lot. There are entire industries riding on this wave of SUCCESS the film industry has just begun to afford New Mexicans.

From Food Service, Lighting, Set Construction & Decorating to of course the stars of the New Mexico desert there are jobs in this here Entertainment Industry.

Not to mention that when that caravan we call Hollywood rolls into to town, they eat, sleep, and SPEND. From Real Estate to $20,000 hotel bills, productions BUY.

Productions also GIVE – give back to the communities that they’re living and working in here. From donations to investments of their time. Productions make improvements to area homes, establishments, and even outdoor spaces where they film. Casts and Crews get out into the community enriching and inspiring civic duty.

And do you know how much air-time costs? Well New Mexico gets global peeps and props that money couldn’t buy because of the big names and productions that come. Whether they fail or fall – we couldn’t have purchased the amount of global recognition we get from the State’s current status as a leader in Film.

…do you think all of these peripherals are being taken into account by any existing audit?

Let’s face it sometimes a production will just NEED a crate of hair spray and a vat of vaseline – ours is not to question why…ours is but to let them BUY.

Spa days, shopping sprees, car service, room service YOUR SERVICE. Let’s keep our doors open for business and let ’em keep pickin-up the check!

Finally, keep it for the kids – We all know that New Mexico Education is in trouble. But, we also know that Film & Production keeps our kids OUT of trouble. From Clovis to Taos and everywhere in between New Mexico is training.

Eastern New Mexico University is currently ramping-up a film program of their very own…

Right here in the Q Youth Development Incorporated teaches and inspires young ones in all aspects of performing and production. Fireborn Films offers intensive training in acting, writing and project development.

New Mexico is COVERED for training a sustainable workforce in Entertainment for generations to come – will there be an industry here for them?
