After settling legal matters concerning film rights in early 2012, the Weinstein Company and Relativity Media are ready to partner on a remake of the beloved 90s classic, The Crow.
Following what amounts to years of speculation on the interwebs of who will step into the iconic lead role, Luke Evans (The Three Musketeers, The Raven, Fast & Furious 6) is set to star as Eric Draven. Bradley Cooper, Mark Wahlberg, Channing Tatum, Robert Pattinson, James McAvoy, Tom Hiddleston and Alexander Skarsgard were considered to play Draven before Evans was finally cast.
Director F. Javier Gutiérrez, has said that the upcoming remake will be even more faithful to the 1989 comic than its 1994 predecessor. Earlier this month, original comic book creator James O’Barr told TFM of Gutiérrez, “It was his idea to go right back to the source material and essentially shoot it shot-for-shot, as in the book, but with a little more backstory for some of the characters…He wants to be as faithful as possible, even down to all the visual metaphors of trains and horses.”
Word on the wire is that production will get underway in 2014 in New Mexico and Michigan for a 2015 release.
Horses, trains? Get ready to saddle-up NM! Choo-choo!

After much ado about casting and re-casting, in round three of who will kick-up some dust and dig in his spurs opposite Oscar winner Natalie Portman in her New Mexico western “Jane Got a Gun”, her Star Wars co-star Ewan McGregor has come into focus!
Both are experienced in NM filming as Portman has been here for both “Thor” and “Brothers”, and McGregor starred in “Men Who Stare at Goats” back in and returned with Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender and Gina Carano for “Haywire”.
As everyone knows all too well nothing is confirmed until all hands are on deck, all stars are on their mark and the director yells, ACTION!
So here’s to a great shoot for all involved, how ever things fall out on this and every AWESOME production rolling right now here in New Mexico!

Remember Seth MacFarlane’s opening line at this year’s Academy Awards? “And the quest to make Tommy Lee Jones laugh starts now”. The funny man who the whole world was watching in that moment was of course addressing the Oscar winner’s semi-famous scowl at the infamously raucous Golden Globe Awards just weeks before.
Now guess who currently has a film in production right here in New Mexico. I’ll tell you that among the many, BOTH of the above do!
The uproarious Oscar host is hard at work on his first western comedy, A Million Ways to Die in the West right here in The Land of Enchantment, and his co-star is none other than Academy Award winner Charlize Theron, who has taken a star turn in New Mexico before in the heart achingly beautiful film, In the Valley of Elah, with then co-star Tommy Lee Jones.
Also included in the Oscar’s opening was another New Mexico filmer. Though not yet branded an Academy Award winner, Channing Tatum‘s impressive body of work swept not only Charlize Theron off her feet but the rest of the the global award show’s audience as well.
And the New Mexico hits just kept coming throughout the broadcast as nominees, presenters and attendees with New Mexico ties continued to appear.
From Lone Survivor and 2 Guns star Mark Wahlberg presenting, to his Academy Award nominated 2 Guns co-star, Denzel Washington, who many New Mexicans were able to work alongside in both 2 Guns and 2009′s The Book of Eli.
On and on and on til the grand finale of the broadcast when NM’s favorite biology teacher turned drug kingpin, Bryan Cranston joined his fellow best motion picture winners on stage for his performance in Argo.
Independent films like Tommy Lee Jones’ current New Mexico project, The Homesman are quietly at work and even more quietly housing possible co-stars who are no strangers to the most coveted award in motion pictures. It is being reported that Oscar winners Hillary Swank and the one and only Meryl Streep are set to star with Jones in the central NM film.
In southern New Mexico a little thriller called, Enemy Way is getting underway starring Oscar winner Forest Whitaker. Also down south, indie “road film” The Run Away is currently in production.
Academy Award winner Natalie Portman may have skipped the big show this year, but the Thor actress isn’t missing out on another New Mexico project (Brothers, Thor) as she is here for her next film, Jane Got a Gun.
Lastly, when Disney’s Avengers hit the stage at the Oscars this year, you were looking at a whole gaggle of New Mexico Filmers…That’s right, lest you forget the biggest picture of last year was in majority filmed right here in New Mexico!
As we’ve reported many times before, Disney is no stranger to NM, and rumor has it that the first Avenger is likely to hit a soundstage near you for at least part of the current Captain America sequel.
Though all of Oscar’s audience didn’t get to gasp in awe like the Grammy audience was able to, when Johnny Depp showed-up at that awards show, film fans all over the world are bracing for the Depp led Disney movie adaptation of The Lone Ranger.
Last year’s NM production of the major motion picture will roll-out this summer showcasing its New Mexico roots. I can also tell you now, that while the Oscar parties rolled-on last month, rumors of a lock on Depp’s next picture making its way to NM were trickling in to us!
Above Joel McHale moderates a panel discussion with Director Steven Soderbergh actors Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender and Gina Carano at the Sunday screening.
The film originally titled “Knockout” was filmed in Dublin, Ireland and northern New Mexico in the Spring of 2010.
“Haywire” also stars Channing Tatum, Michael Angarano, Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas and Bill Paxton.
A dynamic action-thriller, HAYWIRE tells the story of Mallory Kane, a highly trained operative who works for a government security contractor in the dirtiest, most dangerous corners of the world. After successfully freeing a Chinese journalist held hostage, she is double crossed and left for dead by someone close to her in her own agency. Suddenly the target of skilled assassins who know her every move, Mallory must find the truth in order to stay alive. Using her black-ops military training, she devises an ingenious – and dangerous – trap. But when things go haywire, Mallory realizes she’ll be killed in the blink of an eye unless she finds a way to turn the tables on her ruthless adversary. – AFI

ICYDK: You can’t throw a stone without hitting someone or something tied to NM Film – but don’t.
Like the intricate threads woven throughout classic literature…such as in a Cormac McCarthy novel turned film…like the Coen Bro’s Oscar® winning turn at the McCarthy best selling novel, No Country for Old Men, so is New Mexico woven into the fiber of Global Film…
Garret Dillahunt the lovably daft undersheriff to Tommy Lee Jones in No Country is named as the lead in the New Mexico production of The Boys of Abu Ghriab.
Another No Country star, Woody Harrelson is soon to be seen in the HBO original film Game Change which recently wrapped Northern N. Mex. filming…
The Coen bros put “pen to paper” for the reboot of the 1966 film Gambit, this time out starring Cameron Diaz & Colin Firth now filming in…yes, New Mexico!
The likewise best selling Dean Koontz novel turned highly anticipated NM movie, Odd Thomas is (back) at work this week.
Odd director Stephen Sommers also churned out 2009′s GI Joe which starred Sienna Miller and Channing Tatum…Sienna’s current project, Just Like a Woman is now casting and set to shoot right here in NM.
Tatum’s upcoming New Mexico movie Ten Year is expected to premiere this year…but you never can tell, another GI Joe co-star Rachel Nichols starred in the NM film Bird of the Air (formerly titled The Loop) and we’re still waiting on its release.
This isn’t the first NM term for Odd Thomas star Anton Yelchin, who is back for another run as he was for the soon to be released thriller Fright Night.
Anton’s co-star in Fright, Colin Farrell is too a repeat NM filmer as he previously starred opposite the Oscar® winning Jeff Bridges in…the wholly New Mexico film Crazy Heart.
Bridges also worked in NM…in last year’s True Grit along side Matt Damon who first worked NM waay back in ’99 in All the Pretty Horses a film based on the novel of the same name by…you guessed CORMAC MCCARTHY…

No, this isn’t another rundown of the plight of New Mexico film in this year’s legislature…this is a heads-up I’ve just learned about regarding one WHOLLY New Mexico film that came out the year before this here blog started following and documenting as many NM film highlights and goings-on as time and beloved *sources* will allow.

Though this heartthrob’s TWO New Mexico movies have yet to be released, our Golden Tumbleweed Awards are about the work – and boy has done that along with thousands more full & part-time New Mexicans who’ve worked in NM Film, on projects recently wrapped and/or released!
Clearly a favorite as voted and swooned about around town, Channing Tatum takes the top spot, voted favorite temporary New Mexican in this year’s poll.
This pristine beauty may not have taken a golden statue home last night but she handily raked in the most votes as a NM favorite! Hailee Steinfeld comes-in tops just over NM’s perpetual film noir, nay horror queen, young Chloe Moretz – both of whom were but recently, relative unknowns – both of whom are destined for only major greatness in the future.
Thanks for participating in the voting process this year and check-in here to see the local results and last years noms & top vote getters.
UPDATE 2/10/11: A follow-up video just released by our friends at D-House Entertainment featuring Ten Year actor Channing Tatum talking MMA at Jackson’s in Albuquerque. Don’t miss the premiere of The Proving Grounds coming-up next month – in the meantime enjoy:

All Polls close Sunday February 27…Get your vote on!
Next-up is THE AVENGERS, hopefully NOT to be followed by the funeral of all that has become good and holy in the world of New Mexico as the top spot in the country for film making – we all know it’s purdy here, but sunsets alone don’t keep the very mobile, very big business of movie makin’ generating gobs of jobs and joy in NM – KEEP NM FILM!
Catch Tatum this April in another NM Film, Haywire – formerly titled Knockout, with Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas, Ewan McGregor and Gina Carano.
“Lorrie Latham will be casting Dear Annie to start production in January and Christina Ortega will be casting Ten Year [in production as of] December 18 (Starring Anna Faris, Channing Tatum, Jamie Linden, Jenna Dewan, Marty Bowen, Reid Carolin, Wyck Godfrey).
Both will be casting through egcasting.com, so please make sure that your profile is up to date.
The buzz-buzz is that Favs brought HARRISON FORD to his first Comic-Con experience to participate in the Cowboys and Aliens panel this evening…How did Han Solo never go to Comic Con before? Stud.
Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde and Sam Rockwell also appeared. The NM shoot is getting lots o’buzz as Favreau says C&A will be back for Comic Con 2011 just before the release of the much anticipated film – which, as was just disclosed will be in 2 Dimensions…Favs said, “f*ck it” after early digital test shoots.
Just a few weeks into filming the Cowboys ensemble did not disappoint – even bringing a preview reel of the movie that brought the crowd to its feet.
New Mexico is becoming quite a couples paradise or at least haven as big films and their super stars come to work in the Land of Enchantment their lovers come out to visit.
Some endings are happier than others, but we’re happy to play host and haven to celebrity folk amor!
When Channing Tatum was here in the Spring filming Haywire (formerly titled Knockout) with Steven Soderbergh his lovely wife (Megan Fox isn’t the ONLY game in town, this one and tinsel) Jenna Dewan took to the Indian Market and to Twitter giving an early review of the film(ing) saying:
“Watching Steven Soderbergh on set is beyond…a real genius of his craft. and nice and humble. love it.”
Haywire also stars Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas and Gina Carano, and is due out in early 2011.
Sightings of NM’s Own Brat Pack on whole have been few and far between since the early dawn of 2010.
The Pack’s been busy – what with the boys upcoming spread in JQ, photographed exclusively in the all new, sexy Pajama Jeans for Men and the ladies working so hard in the Q all the while fighting off those pesky romance rumors, linking them from everyone from Channing Tatum to Jamie Foxx.
In this never before seen promo shot you get a bizarrely lit hint of what it’s like to hang with this famous party Pack. For the real life impression of their actual WOWNESS, you may only hope to catch-up with them during their upcoming social appearances in the Q this weekend.
Hint: You won’t find ‘em down. They’ll be all Q’d up this Friday.
To book the Pack for your party or promotion you can contact their handlers here.
The New Mexico shoot of Steven Soderbergh’s Knockout, starring Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas and mixed-martial arts beauty Gina Carano is heading to the old car, loose dog capital of NM which bodes well for the recent casting call for exactly that.
According to the New Mexico Film Office web site the production “is seeking beat up cars and dogs” for this week’s filming…surely that’s is to say, dogs and beat-up cars.
Cast & crew worked in the Santa Fe snow yesterday.
Okay, so we’re back. We have no big, breaking info-tainment haps for you other than the news that that VD movie took #1 at the weekend box office. But here’s your all important dose of NM Film Yesterday, Today y Mañana…
Today – As we’ve been reporting, Knockout starring the pectacular Channing Tatum + is currently in production.
T’was just last week that Channing knocked Avatar out of the top spot with Dear John.
Above – a quick clip of the film shooting on the streets of Dublin last week. (Via OLV)
Mañana – Nicola Peltz (The Last Airbender) is slated to work w/ R. Patz in the upcoming indie The Unbound Captives. Start the novenas for homegirl’s safety now. There’s probably already an entire line of voodoo dolls in the little lady’s likeness à la crazed Twilightiacs.
