New Mexico’s Own Ryan McGarvey a Supernatural

Posted by on November 27, 2011 | Comments Off

With dueling biopics (Mystery White Boy, Greetings from Tim Buckley) on the horizon for the late great rocker Jeff Buckley, life has cast its own shadow firmly behind his lively doppelgänger in NM’s Own Ryan McGarvey.

Nothing short of a phenom, on the road from Albuquerque to Amsterdam and everywhere in-between, over and above the rest, McGarvey stands alone in a spotlight all his own.

As we’ve gushed over the oddly seasoned young talent many times before we’ll tell you again, if you haven’t experienced a Ryan McGarvey show, you’re missing out!

Strings for a CURE: Where the Arts meet Humanities

New Mexico’s own resident Guitar God, Ryan McGarvey has teamed with the innovative, life-enriching organization StringsforaCURE™, saying:

“I’m so incredibly honored to work with this organization, and to help for such a worthy cause. Please take a look at the great pieces of jewelry that they were able to make from my guitar strings. All proceeds go to help those with breast cancer.”

Elisa Guida, a two-time breast cancer survivor and jewelry designer, transforms guitar strings into one-of-a-kind bracelets, earrings, pendants and rings. Net proceeds are used to fund the foundation’s efforts to educate, comfort and support cancer patients. The foundation focuses primarily on helping those with breast cancer.

The StringsforaCURE™ Foundation helps women and men diagnosed with cancer, primarily breast. Our mission is to provide education, comfort and support to cancer patients, focusing on the breast cancer patient. We help the patient directly by providing gas, grocery or pharmacy gift cards. We also provide educational materials, comfort baskets and medical grants. We want to ease the burden during their cancer journey. We raise awareness on how important nutrition and wellness plays a part in the recovery of the cancer patient.

National and international musicians donate their used guitar strings to StringsforaCURE™, and I transform them into one-of-a-kind bracelets, earrings, pendants and rings. We also raise funds through our online Virtual Quilt, our Pennies2Patients Program and Pickin’ On Cancer fundraiser and also through private donations.

My dream is to recruit many nationally known musicians – including Eric Clapton, Sheryl Crow, Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen, among many others – to donate their strings to the foundation. We have received strings from several famous musicians, such as Jon Bon Jovi, Melissa Etheridge, Paul Rodgers, Joe Bonamassa to mention a few. -Elisa Guida, Executive Director

The StringsforaCURE foundation is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization, and a Green Foundation. Their jewelry is made in the U.S.A. with net proceeds used to fund the foundation’s efforts to educate, comfort and support cancer patients.

Like so many milestones whether it be the time you see your brother graduate from college and move on further into the world or the last time the nation watches a broadcast of a beloved TV veteran, chapters close and new ones begin.

Yup, one of your faves and mine, my adopted TV bro is up and running with mic all the way to Den Co.

After nine years with KOB-TV, Jeremy Jojola will be signing-off to go to bat for a bigger league at KUSA Denver.

Jai-ho won’t be saying his official, “Hasta Luego” until late July so for now take your chance to rib him as much as possible about everything possible here, here & here and know that this homegrown boy will be taking New Mexico with him wherever he goes!

“I’ve been asked over the years why I haven’t left Albuquerque. A big reason is my wife and my love for New Mexico. I got comfortable here. I became attached. I grew roots. Sorry about the cheesy cliché but its how I feel about this state. People who know me know how much I love New Mexico. I found my identity here. Jackamoe, Drinks & Jams

Posted by on April 3, 2011 | 2 comments

More fun than a night with Charlie Sheen…click here for an R-rated review of what happened with the violent torpedo of nonsense that was unleashed on Detroit last night, read below for a recap on a night out in ABQ to see one of NM’s finest.

We were spared the billy club, by managing to stay on the good side of one Goodfella who keeps all things and all people in-line at the Los Ranchos area hidden valley steakhouse, we were served amazingly shaken and stirred beverages by the cracker-jack staff in the jazz club and we were bathed up close & personal in the transcendent jams of the incomparable, the one, the only, Ryan McGarvey.

Vernon’s definitely delivers that prohibition era, speakeasy feel they purport, complete with a wide array of characters, both staffed and hosted – we saw all manner of people from crazy and sexy, to charming and cool.

But far and away what more than met our already high expectations, of the featured performer who we’ve seen rise in rank and expertise over the years, was the fact that “ain’t nobody got nothing” on Mr. McGarvey.

From Beethoven to Vaughn, comparisons will continue be made but none will suffice, and in this most intimate view we’ve ever had of McGarvey and his beloved band mates, any praise we’ve heaped on him before was solidified yet now seems insufficient and we could not recommend strongly enough that you catch your own glimpse of this New Mexico star.

Video coming soon…

Well HELLO THERE!

UPDATE 4/2/11: Tonight LIVE and on stage, Ryan McGarvey at Vernon’s Jazz Club! Full event details here.

The Ryan McGarvey at Vernon's Jazz Club

A Legend in the making, yours for the taking – Vernon’s Jazz Club pays tribute to NM’s Own Ryan McGarvey with his very own drink. Sidle up to the bar to sip the cocktail named for arguably one of the finest musicians around!

Still but a youngin’ McGarvey earns accolades from all over the country as a premiere artist featured here in Guitar International Magazine in recognition of his nomination to play at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festival this past summer.

Already a veteran blues guitarist at his tender age, Ryan’s Star is just beginning to shine. Catch him whenever and wherever you might get the chance – he is truly an amazing talent that we are all fortunate enough to bear witness to. You WILL be saying, “remember when we saw Ryan McGarvey live”, for years to come!

In the meantime check-in at Vernon’s with the lovely Vanessa (above) and order-up a cool, smooth, sexy glass of the Ryan McGarvey on ice!

Not just for FarmVille and Class Reunions anymore, Social Media runs the gamut from pig-tail pulling to big business dealing. Write your own epitaph, all but eliminate the paparazzi, catch the news – make the news.

When our own local Queen of Social Media puts on a Tweetup that rivals multi-corporation, veteran mainstream media sponsored functions by engaging the power of her social network, promotions and marketing campaigns live or die by the ‘re-tweet’, and the local and national news alike pull threads and report direct from Facebook you’ve gotta take notice.

When the ‘Greasers’ take on the ‘Socs’ in the Outsiders you can’t help but wish that they would just meet in the middle. Get on the Inside, get your ‘Soc’ial Media on to connect in the fastest most effective way possible (if you stroke your keys right).

Where else can you catch a movie, write a review, post an audition, shop til you drop, take a look in a book, spread the word, declare your love, learn a trade, make a pitch and so much more.

Just ask local sensation Ryan McGarvey, fresh off Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festival, what Social Networking helped do for him…

To learn your way around a Social Network and how to best utilize Social Media right here in New Mexico check with our friends at Drake Intelligence Group (ABQ the Mag Best of the City write-in candidate for Best Category We Left Out: Best Social Media Personality), Ashley Drake Gephart and her network-in-the-know will hold your hand till you’re a social media maven yourself!
