While insiders have confirmed with OHI that Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul is on the roster to appear in the show’s upcoming prequel “Better Call Saul”, speculation abounds about which other cast and production members are or might be attached.
Saul Goodman née James McGill, beloved Mike Ehrmantraut and at least a glimpse of Jesse Pinkman are mounting reasons why Bad fans the world over are itching for the “early 2015” debut. Filming is meticulously underway in Albuquerque where the tiniest glimpses of what can be expected are coming to light. And what’s coming to light is that the BCS team is tight and right.
By his own account the bump from a November 2014 premiere into 2015 is due to Vince Gilligan’s producing and directing style being “slow as mud”, so says the Bad creator himself who continued, “I still feel I’m very slow for television”, at the recent Television Critics Association.
Slow and steady she goes, by all ground accounts here in the ABQ, Saul co-creators Gilligan and Peter Gould are hard at work carefully crafting the kind of darkly comedic drama that has the masses addicted to their work.
And what of the at first haphazard chem teacher turned drug kingpin? Like Aaron Paul, Bryan Cranston has purportedly been attached to the new show, but not only with a possible turn as either Heisenberg and/or Mr. White in the series’ flexi-time-line, but behind the camera as an episode DIRECTOR.
Cranston directed episodes of Breaking Bad (Blood Money, No Más, Seven Thirty-Seven), an episode each of The Office and Modern Family, and seven episodes of Malcolm in the Middle, with feature film direction under his belt in the 1999 film, Last Chance, which he also wrote and starred in.
Any way you look at it this series is shaping up to be another WINNER.
Watch for the television production family that spawned Saul on the 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards show, airing Monday August 25 on NBC, where Breaking Bad has been nominated one last time for a whopping 16 Emmys.

Believe it or not New Mexico has played stand-in for such exotic locales as Egypt, Cali, Wyoming, Mexico, other worlds, other galaxies and yes even the East Coast…perhaps you’re familiar with the story of a mad chemistry teacher who made his way all the way to New Hampshire to escape his drug dealing comeuppance. And that my friends was all filmed right here in New Mexico.
So take heart #NM, come November New Mexico WILL hit the small screen again in Better Call Saul – under the talented hand of Sir Odenkirk, led by Masters Gilligan and Gould, for most if not all of its filming. With new character developments emerging and production set to begin within weeks right here in Albuquerque, die hard Baddies around the world await with bated breath.
As anticipation and speculation mounts, separate camps are already beginning to form. Some being of the mindset that Saul can do no wrong as far as being capable of delivering the same level of top tier dark-dramedy so exquisitely executed by its parent, Breaking Bad. While other more paranoid types (count me in here) are terrified that the beloved offspring could turn out to be a bad seed. Please, oh please dear lord (aka Vince Gilligan) don’t let this chip off the old masterpiece devolve into another Joanie Loves Chachi.
Now while sitting in the proverbial waiting room until this project finally airs in November, there is a middle ground to be found which looks a lot like hope. After all, it has been done before – success, even surpassed success of a spinoff from its jump off. Maybe nobody really loved Chachi, but those Milwaukee beer factory workers, Laverne and Shirley too spawned from Happy Days and have since rightfully earned their place in television history.
Just look at how all the hairspray, stone washed denim and shoulder pads of some over privileged teenagers set forth the hit 90s twenty-something prime-time soap opera that was and always will be the one and only Melrose Place. Cynical curmudgeon Archie Bunker and all of his family gave us George and Weezie.
Frasier’s success surpassed that of his ensemble on Cheers. And then there’s Mary. The Goddess who is Mary Tyler Moore and the vast talents behind her shows and characters wrangled her her own show after the Dick Van Dyke Show and even further from Mary Tyler Moore, were we gifted with RHODA!
From the stand-up comedy stages whence he came, Bob Newhart carved out a solid spot for himself in a prime-time comedy show of his very own – AND THEN went on to do it again in the very next decade, dropping the Bob from his Newhart and coming back as a whole new man in an even more successful show. So it can be done.
While it’s still too early to tell who will spinoff from where and what will be what in the prequel world of “Saul Goodman”, a few things are a certainty – Odenkirk can bring it, Gilligan and (Peter) Gould are ferocious and clever beyond our wildest dreams, and there is a standing fan base at the ready to embrace this chapter of the best bad experience of our lives.
In the meantime chew on this: Thursday Showbiz 411 published a scoop claiming that new “Saul” characters will include, “regular players named Burt, Dr. Thurber, Beth, Eddie, and Zak and Luke. Burt is described as a “Kennedy” type lawyer in a white-shoe law firm. Dr. Thurber and Beth are also supposed to be lawyers. Eddie is a career criminal, a cool guy who speaks Spanish. Zak and Luke are skateboarding twins around 20 years old.”
Come on November!
UPDATE 5/1/14: Happy Days spawned Laverne & Shirley, Laverne & Shirley launched Michael McKean and now Michael McKean joins Breaking Bad prequel, Better Call Saul! – Daily Mail UK
UPDATE 4/6/14: Aaron Paul has made no secret of his wish & intent to be a part of the Breaking Bad prequel, Better Call Saul…
Well, TONIGHT a source very close to the actor and the production tells OneHeadlightInk EXCLUSIVELY that all the i’s have been dotted and t’s crossed, officially adding the actor to the upcoming shoot schedule!!!!
Filming is set to begin in Albuquerque by the end of May and continue through early July.
All reports concur that the Breaking Bad criminal lawyer spin-off tentatively titled, “Better Call Saul” is set to hit the AMC coaxials by November 2014.
Also confirmed up and down the wire is that Jonathan Banks (Mike Ehrmantraut) will join Saul star Bob Odenkirk (Saul Goodman) in the prequel…
While we’ve been following every little byte on the subject as it pertains to the production returning to its on location roots by coming home to film in Albuquerque, New Mexico, here, here and here – new conflicting reports have emerged. Some local news outlets say “YES” it is, while another station says, “just might”…
After checking it out with multiple sources, OHI confirms that “Better Call Saul” WILL begin filming in Q this Spring WITH Br Ba and Saul character creators, Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould once again at the helm.
More info. coming very soon! Including who else might be resurrected from their Bad past to also appear!
1/2/2014: Vince Gilligan Talks ‘Breaking Bad’ Regret, Hints at Mike’s Return in ‘Better Call Saul’ – SlashFilm
As we’ve been following for you here, here and here, the project set to bring to light just how Saul became Saul will make its home in Breaking Bad’s backyard, now according to show creator Vince Gilligan:
“Why not shoot Saul in the same way? Let’s shoot it in Albuquerque; let’s get as much of the crew back together as possible, and let’s do it the way we did it before so that it will be of a piece with that pre-existing fictional universe that we had so much fun creating.” -Gilligan to The Hollywood Reporter
Now that the gods have spoken, Albuquerque can officially look forwarded to playing host to one of its most beloved home sprung characters to date, now as a leading man. And no doubt we’ll get to see some old friends again.
But Saul will have to get in line as ANOTHER New Mexico television production has just been picked-up for additional episodes!
Pre Walter White, pre billboards and bus benches, Saul Goodman was a wee McGill, and hopefully the television watching world is just dying to know how he came to be the guy who knows a guy, “who knows a guy…”
The many open ended backstory possibilities for everyone’s favorite criminal lawyer are set to be showcased in the new AMC show dubbed “Better Call Saul”. All summer long Bad fans had been watching and waiting for word from show creator Vince Gillagan and AMC Television for the verdict on the prospective spin-off.
That word came last month, as Baddies were bracing to say goodbye to the series that spawned the Peter Gould created character. Recent reports from the top point to a dark toned series replete with that twisted Saul Goodman humor and wit.
Many of us New Mexicans have been on the edge of our seat, waiting and wondering when the thumbs up, or down would finally pop-out, indicating whether or not the production would take root here where Breaking Bad called home.
Of course we could be wrong, our Star Wars reports have come under fire, but then again so did our Avengers and Lone Ranger suppositions…
What we do know for sure it that things are really hopping down at the largest studios in the city. Before you know it everyone from A to N BC will be airing a New Mexico production!
How does he know that guy, who knows that guy? How and where did he get through Law School? Was he born that way or did his special brand of criminal lawyering germinate out of some poignantly twisted circumstances from his past?
All these burning questions and MORE are now set to be answered in an hour long drama chalk full of the comedic elements Saul Goodman, Attorney at law has lent to Breaking Bad since his glorious entrance in season two.
The prequel promises to introduce us to a pre-Walter White Saul Goodman. Plans for the show have been in the works for quite sometime as we’ve followed for you here and as Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan himself didn’t shy away from talking about here.
The most important question about the spin-off for this blogette and for much of the New Mexico film community at large is…Will the show live and breathe in the hometown of Breaking Bad? One original show insider tells us, “there’s no reason to believe it’s not” heading to NM.
Sony Pictures Television which will produce the show for AMC has long had a home here with Breaking Bad and is currently producing the NBC TV series, The Night Shift at Albuquerque Studios. Sounds like a natural fit!
What do you think?
UPDATE 7/2/2013: Breaking Bad creator, Vince Gillagan says Saul Goodman Spinoff Moving ‘Full Speed Ahead’ -The Wrap TV
As the world anxiously awaits the final eight episodes of the “best show on television”, Breaking Bad fans are equally curious for the verdict on what comes next for cast & crew.
Even before we learn the fate of Walter White & Co. Br Ba devotees look forward to the most likely spin-off in which the best, slimiest, lawless lawyer around, Saul Goodman will once again ease all with, “Better Call Saul”.
Best news for New Mexico is that if a deal is indeed inked for the series, the most likely place for the Saul Goodman led series to take place would be original series home, Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Last fall NBC shot the gritty drama pilot “After Hours” across the interstate, as a prospect for last season’s television schedule. After not making the first cut, then being volleyed back and forth from the pick-up list to the tentative list, an off-cycle short order has been placed for at least four episodes of the show.
And as we’ve previously reported, up north some very special goings-on are going on around the return of the A&E hit series, Longmire and the highly anticipated Seth MacFarlane adaptation of Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey for Fox television.
