ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —Albuquerque’s animal welfare department is putting out a new plan hoping to get more dogs adopted.

All day on Friday, April 26, any dog more than 1-year-old will be just $5. The price includes spay and neuter services, a microchip and registration.

Desiree Cawley, the director at the animal welfare department, told Action 7 News this is the first time they’ve offered anything like this. She said they are simply so overpopulated, they need to make more room.

Animal welfare reported more than 500 dogs in their shelters, more than they had at the same time last year. They said even though they’ve done commercials, put up posters and held event after event, they keep getting more and more dogs.

“We don’t know why it’s happening,” Cawley said.

Most of the dogs they have are strays. Some of them were surrendered by their owners.

Both the Eastside and Westside shelters will have extended hours on Friday. Cawley said they will be open 10:30 to 8 p.m. so that people at work still have an opportunity to come by.
